🥖 Family-Size Meatball Subs
Serves 5
Ingredients
* 2 lbs Italian meatballs
* 2 loaves French bread
* 2 (24-oz) jars marinara sauce
* 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
* 5–6 cloves garlic, minced
* 10 slices provolone
* 2–3 cups shredded mozzarella
* ½ cup grated Parmesan
* 2–3 tbsp olive oil
* 1 tsp Italian seasoning
🍝 Directions
1. Brown the meatballs: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add meatballs and pan-fry until browned on all sides.
2. Add the flavor: Add sliced onion and sauté around the meatballs until softened and lightly caramelized. Add minced garlic and cook for 30–60 seconds, just until fragrant.
3. Simmer: Pour in both jars of marinara. Cover and simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are cooked through and soaking up all that garlicky, oniony sauce.
4. Prep the bread: Cut both French loaves lengthwise and open them up. Don’t toast them. Brush with mix of butter, garlic powder and grated parm.
5. Build in layers:
Marinara → provolone → meatballs → sautéed onions & garlic → more marinara → mozzarella → Parmesan
6. Place the loaded French bread subs on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 8–10 minutes, just until the cheeses are melted.
7. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, slice each loaf into portions, and serve family-style.
🔥 The best part: The soft French bread soaks up that garlicky marinara while the provolone melts underneath the hot meatballs and the mozzarella gets all gooey on top.
