The Saponé hat is a traditional conical hat made of braided straw and decorated with tanned leather, originating from the rural commune of Saponé in Burkina Faso.
The hat dates back to the 13th century and originates from the Bazèga Province in the Centre-Sud region of Burkina Faso.
It is a powerful national symbol of peace, tolerance, friendship between peoples, and social cohesion.
It became Burkina Faso's first officially registered protected geographical indication (PGI) via the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) in April 2022.
