Get her the bouquet she really wants for Valentine's Day.

She said she wants a bouquet for Valentine’s Day…
But what she really wants is a bouquet of baby lambs. 🐑💐
Roses die.
Sheep multiply.
Build the corral. Embrace the tradition. Wife her up. ✨

Part II - Results. One ewe lamb will be culled.
Three will bring new life this spring. 🐑
We cull ewes that don’t get pregnant. It keeps the flock strong, healthy, and well managed. That balance matters on the range.
Sheep is life. 🤍

Out here on the range, our sheep are family. We are halfway through lambing season and taking the time to do things the right way. Before any ewe is culled for stew meat, we make sure she is not pregnant. That responsibility matters to us.

With full-time range sheep, not everything is easy to see. Ram markers can fall off, and some signs are missed. In the past, we relied on experience, our hands, and patience. Today, we also use a simple blood pregnancy test on the ranch to help us be certain. It has been a helpful tool and brings peace of mind.

Sheep is life. We care for them with respect, responsibility, and gratitude—just as we were taught. 🤍🐑

EVERY trip we make down to the sheep corral, we always bring our lambing bag because it contains everything we need to help a newborn lamb get on its feet, as well as tag, dock, and assist any sick lambs.

For newborns, our go-to product is Nutri-Drench (not an ad😆). After the lamb has had its first milk, we give two pumps for an extra boost. We then use a small cup to dip into iodine for the umbilical cord.

First 24 hours, we tag the lambs: the left ear for ewe lambs and the right ear for ram lambs. This allows us to easily identify them when they return to the flock. We have been using a tail docker for about four years, which has been tremendously helpful as it reduces blood loss by crushing the veins.

Next 48 hours, some lambs may experience soft stool buildup that may or may not indicate scours. Gentle dish soap can help with this buildup, and using Desitin keeps them comfortable. Fortunately, we only need to clean them once, and it doesn't happen again. Inverted eyelids, also known as entropion, occurred when we bought a ram at auction. We typically only see one lamb per season with this issue. The clips designed for eyes work well, but you can also use any alligator clips from an office supply or hardware store. Sometimes simply stretching out the eyelid can also help.

Stay tuned for the emergency edition! 🐏

Late rains + warm weather = green winter grass → bloat 🐑 They grazed about 9 hrs today… gonna have to cut it back to 4 so they can digest.
