Fruit from Nathan Coombs Estate makes its way through our crush pad at Katherine Lindsay Estate, sorted by hand, destemmed, and moved to tank to begin fermentation. This Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in rocky volcanic soil at the base of the Vaca Mountains, has traveled the length of the county to reach us here in Sebastopol. Every bin tells the story of a season that started overnight in
the dark and now continues in the cellar.

Same varietal, three distinct expressions.

Our Goldrock Estate, Cleary Estate, and Katherine Lindsay Estate Pinot Noirs each carry the fingerprint of their origin: Goldrock’s velvety texture and dark raspberry lift, Cleary’s bright cranberry energy and mouthwatering citrus finish, and Katherine Lindsay’s layered red fruit framed by iron and red clay. Tasted side by side, they offer a clear lesson in how much a few miles of soil and elevation can change what’s in the glass.

Harvest at Nathan Coombs Estate typically stretches into late September and October, as cool fog drifting in from San Pablo Bay slows ripening and extends the growing season. This year, warmer weather brought harvest earlier across our estate vineyards, and our team has been hand-picking Cabernet Sauvignon here overnight to preserve the fruit’s freshness. Set at the base of the Vaca Mountains in rocky, volcanic soil, this site’s character comes through in every vintage, shaped by conditions that reward patience even when the calendar shifts.

Grateful for the recognition in W**e Spectator’s California Pinot Noir Tasting Report, where our 2024 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir was singled out as the poster child for the vintage. James Molesworth’s report also included our 2024 and 2023 Katherine Lindsay Estate and 2024 Fraenkle Cheshire Vineyard bottlings among his recommended selections. As Paul shared in the piece, 2024 sits between two remarkable vintages, delivering riper, more generous character that feels quintessential to this region.

Harvest at Katherine Lindsay Estate happens in the dark, our team hand-picking Pinot Noir through the night while the fruit is still cool from the evening air. With the vines surrounding our winery here, filled bins make only a short drive to the crush pad rather than a long haul across the county. That proximity means less time between picking and processing, which helps preserve the fruit’s freshness and keeps oxidation and heat exposure to a minimum. It’s a rhythm shaped entirely by this site and what it asks of us each season.

Over the past month, we’ve gathered at Lindsay House with the growers, winemakers, and longtime friends who have shaped and supported this winery’s story since 1991. From an intimate dinner to a celebration lunch, each gathering was a chance to share the table, trade stories, and taste through library and current-vintage wines that trace our journey across Sonoma and Napa. We’re deeply grateful for Paul’s leadership and the standard of excellence he continues to hold us to, and for everyone who has been part of these 35 years. Here’s to the vineyards that started it all, and to what comes next.
