Sip, Savor, and Yakima Flavor: What Makes a Good Drink & Where to Find One

Is it the garnish? The amount of alcohol? The mixers? The size? Or maybe it’s the person who created it.

Everyone has their own idea of what makes a drink good. Some people want it strong enough to feel the buzz after one sip, while others prefer something smooth and subtle, the kind of drink that makes you forget there’s even alcohol in it.

For me, it really depends on the where, what, and when. I love a fruity drink that hides the vodka, rum, or whatever else is in there, but those are the ones that can sneak up on you. Other times, I want a straight shot of good tequila. That’s when it’s all about the taste and the buzz.

When you walk up to the bar for a cocktail, what are you hoping for? Something pretty: layered colors, fresh garnish, a little sparkle. Or something bold, strong enough to make you feel it right away.

There’s no wrong answer. A good drink is about balance, flavor, presentation, and the moment you’re in. Whether it’s a fruity cocktail or a shot of tequila that burns just right, the best drink is the one that fits you right then and there.

Drinking Around Yakima

When you drink around Yakima, different places mean different things to me.

We all know about getting Lotusized; when you go to The Lotus Room, you’re there to experience a drunk like no other. Then there’s Yakima Steak Company, home of the best homemade sour for their margaritas; it’ll make you order more than one, guaranteed.

People my age remember Pete’s. We didn’t care about taste; we were there to dance and drink whatever was cheapest. WaterFire, on the other hand, is where you’ll find the fancy drinks — always something new and beautiful to try.

And since we live in wine and beer country, I have to shout out our local breweries and wineries. They’ve brought so much flavor and creativity to the valley, truly shaping Yakima’s drink culture into something special.

Every bar tells a story, and every drink carries a memory. It’s not just about what’s in the glass; it’s about where you are, who you’re with, and how it makes you feel.
