This old girl lost her calf late last spring so she's got a head start compared to others at keeping her weight on. We felt like she needed a 6+ or 7 BCS. Remember, fat and sassy isn't healthy for your cow herd. Unless you're talking about prime steers, fat isn't a good thing. Even this efficient mama had no taste for the dog fennel though.

We couldn't see any rib so we gave this mama a BCS of 5. It may look like the grass is tall, but it's dry and mostly stem because of lack of rain. This mama is grazing on any new growth she can find and staying in pretty good condition to breed back quickly once she calves.

Visited Tokeena Angus on Saturday to see how their cow herd measures up on BCS. We could see some rib on this one so we thought she'd be about a 4. The pastures here are dry as well and the need for rain is evident.

Check out this gorgeous group of brood cows at AM PM Farm in Fountain Inn. It's been a dry summer but these cows are rotated regularly to fresh grazing and it shows. Not too fat, not too thin. Perfect condition to calve and breed back quickly.
