This was one of those winters when I slowed down at the brewery and spent more time being part of my community.
During my 20 years in the Coast Guard, I never really had the chance to put down roots and connect deeply with the places where we lived. We felt that when we moved to Seward in 2008, and the hope of one day returning stayed with us for years.
There is no way I could have been a student, much less an instructor, the day I retired. Seward, my friends on the Chamber Board, and even these last six months serving on the Fire Service Area Board have taught me a lot. They have helped me stay focused on what matters, appreciate the value of everyone's time, and keep learning from the people around me.
Now, more than five years after hanging up the uniform, I can honestly say that despite a few bumps along the way, we are incredibly lucky to be part of Seward.
This experience has also made me think about how I can keep growing and help make life better for others. My two biggest motivations this summer are supporting the volunteers who are helping organize and strengthen the Bear Creek community, and helping finish the Fire Department building. Our volunteers deserve a place where they feel comfortable, supported, and appreciated while serving our neighborhoods.
As we head into another summer, stop by for a b**r and bring a friend. I think there are some exciting things ahead, not because of anything I am doing alone, but because this community is full of people who support one another and believe in building something worthwhile together.
After spending time with this group, I genuinely believe every one of the students has the grit, determination, and vision to turn their ideas into reality. One thing Seward has taught me is that success rarely happens alone. It grows from good friends, supportive neighbors, mentors, and customers who are willing to give someone a chance. Please visit these businesses, recommend them to others, and support them with both your words and your business.
