Barn stripping day. It sounds almost charming until you know what it actually means. It’s scraping. It’s shoveling. It’s eight loads of soiled bedding hauled out, one after another. It’s blowing out the whole barn, cobwebs and dust and whatever else has been living up in those rafters rent free. Then barn lime spread across the floor to freshen everything, and twenty five bags of pine shavings opened and shaken out, clean and pale and smelling like a lumber yard.
All of it against the clock, because the storm was coming.
We beat it. Barely. And then we opened the gate.
They came in as one clump. Donks and goats packed together, easing through the gate like they’d never laid eyes on the place before, sniffing at shavings they had nothing to do with. Not one word of thanks between the lot of them.
They deserve nothing less.
Now the rain is coming down, everybody’s tucked in, and we are FILTHY. Head to toe, boots to eyebrows, headed straight for the shower.
