You know the kind of person whose words and whole life line up. You never have to wonder with them. What they say on Sunday is who they are on Tuesday.

John writes the shortest book in the Bible, 13 verses, and he spends them on two things.

Walk in the truth. Truth is who Jesus is, so walking in it starts with knowing Him.

Love each other. Not a new command, John says. The original one.

Two commands. Two ideas that cannot be separated.

Before the first frost, the fall garden hands you a short list. Some of it can't wait, and a lot of it can.

Here's ours, in order. Harvest what the frost will take, save the seeds and flowers you'd normally toss, and get garlic and spring bulbs in the ground. Sow a cover crop, clean up (but not everything), and feed the compost pile. Dig the dahlias once the tops go black, then close out the season.

The timing runs on your own first frost date, not a zone number, so it works wherever you garden. Ours usually comes in October here in East Tennessee.

So grateful for this crew. Our rescue and sanctuary residents are healthier and happier for today’s visit.

Everybody told me I had to pick one. Chickens or a garden.

I have both, on purpose, and the garden is better for it. The hens eat the squash bugs and cabbage worms before I ever see them. They turn the soil for free, and when a bed is finished for the season, they clean it out and leave it fed.

Here's the whole trick. Give them a spot that's theirs. Mine claimed part of a raised bed for a dust bath, and I let them have it. Then protect your lettuce and seedlings. Everything else, they mostly leave alone.

Chickens, ducks and geese in your garden. Oh my.

You can put a seed in good soil and walk away, and nothing much happens. I have done that with seeds and I have done it with myself. I start something, I mean it, and then the tending stops.

Peter says don’t lose a minute building on what you have been given. On top of our basic faith, add these seven:
Good character
Spiritual understanding
Alert discipline
Passionate patience
Reverent wonder
Warm friendliness
Generous love

With those growing in us, no grass will grow under our feet, and no day will pass without its reward.

Without them, nothing has changed.

So this week, let’s ask ourselves: how is my life different in Jesus Christ?

Notice what's growing. This time of year it's easy to see only what's finishing in the garden, but something new is always starting if you look close enough. What's growing at your place right now?

Don't leave your garden sitting bare all winter.

Bare dirt loses nutrients every time it rains, packs down hard, and hands you a bed full of weeds in the spring. So you plant something you never intend to harvest. That's all a cover crop is.

Cereal rye if you're running late, because it comes up in cold soil and it's almost impossible to kill. Crimson clover if you want it beautiful and pulling nitrogen out of the air while it grows.

Go by your own first frost, not a date on the calendar. Grasses want about a month of growing before your first hard freeze. Legumes want six weeks. Count backward from yours.

Fifteen minutes, no canner, and they're ready to eat tomorrow.

I pulled these jalapeños out of the garden this week because the frost is coming for them either way. Slice them, pack the jar, pour the hot brine over the top, and into the fridge they go. That's the whole job.

They go on nachos, on tacos, on eggs, in cornbread, and straight out of the jar when nobody is looking. Take the seeds out and they stay mild. Leave them in and they bite.

My hens don't need me deciding how much calcium they get. They just need it where they can reach it.

The Eaton Pet & Pasture crushed oyster shells go in their own feeder, free choice, right beside the layer feed. Some days my girls go straight for it. Some days they walk right past. That's how it's supposed to work. She'll tell you when she needs it.

You can see the shells in there. That's what sold me.
