🐷❤️ NATIONAL PORK MONTH — DAY 7: WHY DO PIGS LOVE MUD? ❤️🐷

💦🌞 A mud puddle isn’t just a pig’s idea of a swimming pool… it’s their own little cooling system! 😂

Ever wonder why pigs seem determined to turn every patch of dirt into a mud bath? There’s actually a good reason!

🐷 Pigs don’t sweat like we do! They have very few functional sweat glands, which makes cooling down in hot weather a challenge.

🌡️ Mud helps them stay cool. As moisture evaporates from their skin, it helps them lose heat.

☀️ It offers protection from the sun. A coating of mud can help protect their skin from sunburn.

🦟 It can help with pesky insects, too! Mud can discourage some biting insects and provide relief from irritation.

🌱 Around Wiedemann Lakeside Ranch, we love seeing our Tamworths act like pigs and enjoy their natural behaviors. A muddy nose and a messy pig might not look glamorous, but sometimes that’s exactly what a happy pig looks like! 😂❤️

Of course, pigs still need access to shade, fresh water, and proper care to stay comfortable and healthy.

🐷 Today’s National Pork Month reminder: Sometimes getting dirty is just part of taking good care of yourself!

Tell us: Does your idea of a relaxing day involve a spa… or a mud bath? 😂👇

🐷 National Pork Month — Day 6: Momma Knows Best ❤️

THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE A MOMMA PIG AND HER BABIES. 🐷❤️

One of our favorite parts of National Pork Month is getting to celebrate the whole story behind the pork—and that story starts with healthy mommas raising healthy babies.

Our new little bacon seeds have been busy doing what piglets do best: eating, sleeping, snuggling, and following Momma everywhere! 🐷💤

Momma pig plays a pretty important role in those first weeks. Her milk provides the nutrition her piglets need while they grow, and the piglets stay close to her for warmth, comfort, and protection.

And watching a litter of piglets pile up together next to Momma?

Absolutely one of the sweetest sights on the farm. 🥹❤️

At WLR, we believe raising quality meat starts with raising animals with care. That means caring for our mommas, giving them a healthy environment, and giving their babies the best start we can.

Because before they’re pork on someone’s table, they’re living, breathing animals that deserve to be treated with respect. 🌱🐷

So this National Pork Month, we’re celebrating Momma, her babies, and the beginning of their journey here at Wiedemann Lakeside Ranch.

❤️ Healthy momma.
🐷 Happy piglets.
🌱 Raised with care.
🥓 WLR pork.

🐷 National Pork Month — Day 5: Sleepy Little Bacon Seeds 💤

PIGLET FACT: NEWBORNS SLEEP A LOT! 🐷💤

Newborn piglets can sleep around 18–20 hours a day. That might sound like the dream life, but all that sleep is important work!

While they’re sleeping, their little bodies are busy:

❤️ Growing
💪 Building strength
🛡️ Supporting their developing immune systems
🌡️ Regulating body temperature
🐷 Conserving energy for eating, exploring, and growing

And when they aren’t sleeping?

They’re usually busy eating, snuggling with Mom, or trying to figure out what those tiny legs are supposed to do. 😂

These little ones are only getting started, and we absolutely love watching them grow!

Today’s National Pork Month reminder:
Sometimes the hardest-working pigs on the farm are the ones who spend most of the day sleeping. 😂❤️

🐷 National Pork Month — Day 5: A Bacon Baby Boom! 🐷

WE WENT ON VACATION… AND THE PIGS HAD OTHER PLANS! 😂

National Pork Month is all about celebrating the animals behind the food—and apparently our pigs decided that October was the perfect time to help us celebrate! 🐷❤️

While we were away on vacation, 4 little bacon seeds made their grand entrance into the world! 🐖🐖🐖🐖

And because apparently four new farm babies weren’t enough…

🐣 5 more baby chicks hatched, too!

We came home to a whole lot more little feet running around the farm. ❤️

Thankfully, we had Beth Woods Roach holding down the fort while we were gone! She took wonderful care of all the animals and even made sure the newly hatched chicks were moved when they were ready. We are so grateful to have someone we trust looking after our animals while we’re away!

So, for National Pork Month, we’re celebrating with a little extra bacon… baby bacon, that is. 😂🥓🐷

We’re excited to watch these little Tamworth babies grow and can’t wait to introduce them properly!

Apparently, the farm doesn’t believe in taking vacations. 😂❤️

🐷 National Pork Month — Day 4: Pigs Were Made to Forage!

DID YOU KNOW? 🐷🌱

Pigs aren’t just professional mud-makers and enthusiastic snackers…they’re actually natural foragers!

Our Tamworths love spending their days doing what pigs naturally do:

🌱 Foraging for plants and roots
🐽 Rooting through the soil
👃 Using their incredible sense of smell
🌿 Exploring their surroundings
💦 And, of course…finding every mud puddle they possibly can! 😂

That natural rooting and foraging behavior is one of the reasons we love Tamworth pigs so much. They’re an active, hardy heritage breed that thrives when given the opportunity to live outdoors and behave like pigs.

And there’s a bonus: their rooting can actually disturb and turn over the soil, becoming part of our ranch’s natural management system.

Around WLR, we believe farming isn’t just about raising an animal—it’s about working with the land and allowing our animals to play a role in the ecosystem. 🌱❤️

So if you see a Tamworth with a muddy nose…

Don’t worry. They’re probably just doing their job. 😂🐷

What do you think our pigs spend more time doing: eating or digging? 👇

🐷 National Pork Month — Day 3: What Makes Heritage Pork Different?

WHAT MAKES HERITAGE PORK DIFFERENT? 🐷🌱

You’ve probably heard us call our Tamworths a heritage breed, but what does that actually mean?

Heritage breeds are traditional livestock breeds that have been raised for generations and are valued for characteristics that can get lost when production focuses solely on speed and efficiency.

Our Tamworths are naturally hardy, active, excellent foragers, and well-suited to outdoor living—all qualities we love about them here at WLR. 🌿

And because we believe that how an animal is raised matters, we choose to raise our pigs in a way that lets them do what pigs are naturally meant to do:

🐷 Root
🌱 Forage
☀️ Explore
💦 Make a mud puddle their personal swimming pool
😂 And occasionally make a complete mess of everything!

We aren’t trying to raise the most pigs as quickly as possible. We’re focused on raising healthy animals with care and producing food we’re proud to feed our own family.

That’s what farm-to-table means to us.

❤️ Heritage breed. Raised with care. Raised the WLR way.

What would you like to know about our pigs? Drop your questions below—we might answer yours in an upcoming Pork Month post!

🐷 National Pork Month — Day 2: Why Tamworth?

WHY TAMWORTH? 🐷🌱

Not all pigs are created equal—and around here, we’re pretty partial to our Tamworths!

Tamworth pigs are a heritage breed known for their beautiful red coloring, hardiness, foraging ability, and excellent pork. They’re naturally suited to life outdoors, which makes them a great fit for the way we raise animals here at Wiedemann Lakeside Ranch (WLR).

Our pigs get to root, forage, explore, and just be pigs. 🐷🌿

We chose Tamworths because we wanted a breed that fit our philosophy—not just a pig that grows quickly, but an animal that thrives in a more natural environment and produces exceptional-quality pork along the way.

All month long, we’re celebrating the pigs behind the pork and giving you a little more insight into what makes WLR different.

🐷 Heritage breed.
🌱 Raised with care.

Would you choose heritage-breed pork over conventional pork? Tell us why! 👇

🐷❤️ IT’S NATIONAL PORK MONTH! ❤️🐷

October is officially National Pork Month, and around here, that means it’s time to celebrate the animals behind some of our favorite food! 🐖

At Wiedemann Lakeside Ranch (WLR), our Tamworth pigs are more than just livestock—they’re part of the ranch family. From Big Papa and Miss Piggy to all the little personalities running around the pasture, we take pride in raising them with care, respect, and plenty of room to be pigs. 🌱🐷

Our goal is simple: provide top-quality meat, raised sustainably and ethically for our family and our customers.

No antibiotics. No hormones. Just animals raised with care and food we’re proud to put on our own table. ❤️

So all month long, we’ll be sharing more about our pigs, how we raise them, some of our favorite pork cuts, behind-the-scenes farm life, and maybe a few piggy antics along the way. 😉

🐷 Happy National Pork Month from WLR!

Follow along and celebrate pork with us all October! 🥓🍖
