My heart is broken for all those who have been affected by hurricane Helene, and now Milton. Praying that the Lord would keep them safe, would bring comfort and salvation to those who do not yet know him, and that we as a country would be able to support and help those who are suffering. πŸ™

This has led me to look into the history of hurricanes, which is really fascinating for a nerd like me. But one thing that I am finding out very quickly, is that thanks to our technology now, we have far less loss of life than we used to.

Also, I am learning that these massive storms are not as rare as we think they are. We are just better at recording them and getting people to safety because of our technology. But I think maybe it is a bit arrogant to think that we will never be surprised by the weather and catastrophe, and maybe we could better prepare our minds and spirits.

The Bible is clear that not only are our souls affected and damaged by sin, but so is the natural world. One day, He will make all things new, without the destructive, core - rotting effect of sin. But that is not today.

As difficult as it is, we live in a broken world, with broken governments, broken bodies, broken minds, broken souls. But God, in His great loving kindness and compassion has made a way to fix what is broken and redeem all the pain. If you struggle to make sense of all the destruction you are seeing or experiencing, I pray you would seek to know the One who stands ready to redeem it all. Find comfort in His goodness and sovereignty, even when everything is confusing and painful and falling down around you. He can make sense of it, bring good out of it, give purpose to that pain. He can bring peace to your soul, and hope for the future.

If you have not yet given your life to the one who gave His life for you, I pray that you would today. πŸ™

Loving that my flowers are still giving me more beautiful blooms! These zinnias have brought me so much joy. 😍 And my calendula plants are still producing, So I will keep cutting and drying them as long as the weather holds out. πŸ™

Also decided to pull up some of my carrots just to check them and see how they're doing. A lot of my bigger crops did not do well this year - butternut squash, broccoli, sugar snap peas... BUT, My carrots have been growing beautifully, and I'm so excited to harvest them all after the first light frost (which should come really soon!). πŸ₯³

I feel like gardening really has to be held loosely in my hands, because the results are rarely what I expect. But I'm grateful for what has done well and already formulating what I will and won't do next year!

Who else is already thinking about next year's gardens? πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

My garden has not produced what I hoped for this summer. My butternut squash plants never grew beyond 8 inches. My broccoli plants didn't produce any florets. My pepper plants produced one small pepper (shown in the picture). My tomatoes are still green on the vine, and I am hoping they ripen before it gets too cold here in Northern Vermont. My sugar snap peas produced maybe a couple dozen pods. πŸ˜–πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

But a number of things did do surprisingly well, And I learned a lot along the way.

My chamomile plants, as well as all my other flowers, grew beautifully and added cheer to my garden and home. Many of the herbs I planted came up even when I thought they wouldn't because the seeds were old. Same with my carrots! And they are still growing in the ground and I'm waiting for our first frost before I harvest them. (But I was too curious so I had to pick a few just to see how they were doing! 😁) My ruby red lettuce plants are still growing and never bolted. And the turnips eye planted all grew wonderfully, but I learned that my family does not like turnips and they are so much work that I don't think I will grow them again next year. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

All in all, it has been very satisfying and enjoyable to see things growing, to learn from mistakes, and I am already thinking about what I will do won't do, we'll plan and won't plan next year! ☺️

So many elderberries!!! πŸ™Œ

So grateful to have such a crop this year!

If you've been thinking of trying fresh elderberries, now's your chance! Syrup made from fresh berries is so much tastier than the dried, and they'd even make a great jelly, once the solids are strained out.

Still have plenty to sell for anyone interested! 😊

$15 per pound

I know everyone's gaga over the berries, but my favorite part are the flowers. They're so delicately beautiful and remind me so much of wedding decor. They smell beautiful and they are also highly medicinal and good for colds and viruses. 😍
