Whiskey making sure the new bag of minerals is up to par! A huge misconseption is 'grass-fed beef is the best'. Although we do not currently use grain as a finishing agent, we do provide our animals with free-choice minerals and protein tubs year-round. You might think that 'grass-fed' is best for YOU but the cattle will more than likely would be and should be provided a free-choice mineral. Minerals are exactly what the name says, it is a granular product that is put into feeder where the cattle can get what they need. It is no different than humans taking a multi-vitamin daily. Cows can regulate their intake of this product depending on what their body needs that day. The only difference between a grass-fed animal and one that has had minerals is the meat quality! We have seen a huge difference in meat quality by adding these minerals and the cattle end up finishing faster than a grass-fed one.
Due to Vermont's enviroment, often times the hay lacks some important vitamins and minerals that the cattle become deficent in. Since adding these outside mineral sources to our program we have noticed a HUGE difference in animal health and quality. Keeping the cows healthy and happy is essential on any farm.

Everyone loves a fresh bag of minerals! Ruby is always front and center when a new bag gets added in.
Providing a mineral to our cattle helps them get all the vitamins and minerals they need, that might not be in the hay. Some differences we have noticed with using Kent minerals include: calving rates, conception rates, carcuss quality, overall health of the cattle, and so many other things! They only eat 4 ounces of mineral a day, which is right around 17 cents per head per day. 17 cents a day is worth it to keep our cattle healthly.

What a difference Framework free-choice minerals make! The top photo was taken when we first got Whiskey, a 3 year old Aberdeen Angus steer. Bottom photo is exactly one year later.
Whiskey lives on pasture through the summer and high quality hay through the winter both at his previous farm and ours. The only difference was adding a free-choice mineral and an Energilass tub. Talk about a transformation!
Whiskey was our first Aberdeen & has taken over showing the calves the ropes around the farm and is right there to protect his herd. He is a bit shy but once you give him some back scratches, he will follow you around like a dog! Whiskey is a farm favorite and enjoys living his best life with us.
