Real Life Farm

Real Life Farm Offering yarn, roving & raw fleece.

Small farm in middle Tennessee raising critically endangered Gulf Coast Native sheep, Shetland sheep, a few random goats, and more chickens than I'm comfortable admitting to.

The sheep went out to graze at dawn, and they're already back to find shade because it's HOT. They came back to find Misty camped out in the absolute best spot in the shed for maximum fan exposure. No matter how pesty the lambs are, she's not giving up that spot 🤣

Welcome to another episode of 'Farming on the Surface of the Sun'.
The Revenge of Summer is fully upon us, and we're headed into another day of triple digit heat indexes, much to the Woolies' dismay.
Chores happened early & the barn fans are already cranking. The rest of my day will consist of knitting in between regular barn checks to make sure everyone has enough water & shade.
The sheep gave serious thought to skipping the whole grazing thing in favor of eating hay in front of the fans, but ultimately decided to get a little grass while they could.
The Bigs will be keeping it low key today too. Waylon is on the DL after a coyote encounter Monday night (he's ok, no wounds, just needs some rest & nsaids). He spent last night on lock down and was raring to get out & police his territory this morning. Misty will probably join him in the garage because she can-it's good to be Queen.
Kudos and condolences to all the folks that farm where this is the every day norm in the summer. As much as I love my farm, I don't think I could do it when gates are literally too hot to touch at 2pm for 6 months out of the year.

'Ma'am? Excuse me, have you seen our brain cell? We seem to have lost track of it.'
Sorry guys, Mercury's using it at the moment, he'll pass it back when he's done with it 🤣
They don't call it a Confusion of Guineas for nothing.

The revenge of summer is coming to middle TN this week. I decided to take some time out this afternoon for some front porch knitting while the heat is still bearable. I had some pretty good company ❤️

A reading from the Book of Things I Never Expected to Say (chapter 'screamed from the back porch'): 'Mabel, if you get your head stuck in that damned fence again I swear I will shoot you & leave you for the coyotes!'
Of course, I wouldn't really. She was a good 200 yards away & I don't have a scope.🤣 But I'll be damned if it didn't work!

Another beautiful start to another beautiful day ❤️

The world has lost an exemplary soul. If you're not acquainted with Dolly beyond the rhinestones and hair, I urge you to read about her philanthropic side and her absolutely enormous heart. She put so much good out into the world and helped so many people. If we could all be just a little bit more like Dolly, the world would be a much, much better place.

We're 2 weeks out from Misty's final x-ray, and she's taking advantage of her new found freedom by going back to taking 10 hour day naps in all her old favorite places. She's supposed to be in the 'muscle building' phase of her recovery so that she doesn't pull a hamstring when she's completely cut loose. Anyone with LGDs knows that 'controlled exercise' is really not in their vocab.
This morning's cool cloudy weather was the perfect day to put her on a leash and try a group hike. Misty wasn't raised with herding dogs, and historically is not a fan of the high speed energy & frenetic nonsense that comes with hiking with border collies. Forget having her loose while one of the dogs is working her sheep. She's definitely mellowed, and was more focused on staking out her territory with the neighborhood predators in the woods again than she was in telling the BCs to get it together. It helped that Shy is wise enough to realize that even post op Misty is not to be trifled with, and she kept her snarky cheap shots to herself.
Our morning hike is about a mile loop of moderately rough terrain, and even though we did it at a Misty mosey today she earned her morning garage nap. She's not going to be real happy when I make her get up at lunch time though.

Oh my goodness folks, here we go. For the first time in AGES, it's cooler outside than it is inside. We have our first official sweatshirt morning! It will probably only last an hour, but I'm going to take that whole hour to sit on the porch with my dogs & my coffee and enjoy it. This, right here, is one of my favorite times of year.
