Cider quietly continues to be a positive outlier amidst otherwise challenging trends for the broader Beer category & this was a fun exercise to decompose the key drivers behind Cider's recent success. Check out the recap through the Brewbound link below.

Hard cider may be growing — but 77% of the segment’s dollars are controlled by just 10 vendors. 🍎📊

According to new data from Bump Williams Consulting, hard cider dollar sales rose 3.6% in the latest 52 weeks, with Boston Beer commanding a 35.8% share and adding more than $17 million in sales. Meanwhile, only two of the top 10 beer vendors are actively participating in cider, compared to eight in non-alcoholic beer — a reflection of cider’s slower, single-digit growth and highly concentrated landscape.

While leading players like 2 Towns, Blake’s and Schilling posted gains, the bottom 200 cider-focused vendors saw dollar sales decline 6%, underscoring how difficult it is to break through in the top-heavy category. 🍺📉

The trifecta of Margaritas, Teas and Lemonades have been a bright spot when it comes to BevAl incrementality, though not all flavor alternatives are created equal when it comes to recent relevance. There are several dynamics within that separate the Growth Drivers from the Loss Leaders.

Ready-to-drink (RTD) hard lemonade has surged to $1.5 billion in sales, but new styles are squeezing out the segment's mainstays.

This day and age it is important to keep up with the shifting power dynamics across both sides of Beverage Alcohol, "Traditional" vs. "Flavored", and how portfolio evolution through Innovation and/or Acquisition can tip the scales at retail.

The headline may read as harsh initially, but the message is all about what we can/should be doing to help Beer re-gain stability, and hopefully, share of mind among consumers.

Festivus is still nine months away, but there is already an airing of grievances among industry thought leaders before the end of Q1.

This was a fun snapshot to put together at the request of Brewbound & it certainly yielded some interesting findings. While NA continues to reinvent itself as a sizeable category within Beer thanks to its diversity / flexibility of occasions, there has also been an inevitable slowdown in collective momentum after a torrid run at retail.

Does that mean that the magic has run out? Absolutely not. It just means that it is now time to shift into the next phase of finding new Shoppers, increasing frequency and pumping up volume in a more saturated environment.

The non-alcoholic (NA) beer segment failed to grab a significant amount of dollar share in grocery stores in January, according to NIQ data analyzed for Brewbound by Bump Williams Consulting (BWC).

When nearly everyone is in decline, success has to be measured by whomever has the smallest losses. And those winners within beverage-alcohol are the companies with the most focused portfolios, according to Bump Williams Consulting’s (BWC) latest monthly report.

All eyes are on the Hopes vs. the Realities for Beer this weekend. Will performance generate optimism heading into the back half of the year OR will current holes get dug even deeper? Let's hope for the former because the list of challenges is long enough as it is...it's time for a light at the end of the tunnel to reveal itself!

Hope everyone has a Fun and/or Relaxing 4th of July weekend!

Winners of the July 4 holiday weekend are expected to mainly fall within the non-alcoholic (NA) beverages, domestic beer and and ready-to-drink (RTD) segments – all segments that have been able to find growth in 2025 despite industry-wide headwinds – according to the latest monthly report from B...

It was an honor to participate in Craft Brewers Conference this year & join such a well-respected collection of industry veterans on this panel.

The topic could not be timelier & it is important to remember that Craft Beer is certainly NOT Dead, but like any maturing industry, it does require Strategy, Tactics & a willingness to Evolve in order to find a path to success.

Thanks for a great write-up Brewbound!

Despite recent headwinds, craft beer continues to have the largest share of beer sales at Total Wine & More stores. But “it won’t stay that way” if industry trends continue, according to the chain retailer’s senior director, merchandising, Andrea Starr.
