For two hundred years you could start a ranch in New Mexico without owning a single sheep
You borrowed the flock. That was the whole system, and it built most of the sheep country in the northern half of this state.
It's called partido. A patrón with an established flock lent out a set number of ewes to a partidario, who took on the herding and every bit of the risk, paid back around twenty percent of the flock a year, and returned the same head count in three to five years. Whatever the flock gained beyond that was yours. New Mexicans had it running by the mid-1700s, and it was still carrying the industry through the decade when the sheep population here grew by close to half a million head between 1850 and 1860. Cash-poor province, no banks worth the name, capital moving anyway — on four legs.
When the lambs came, it worked for everybody. When they didn't, the partidario owed the difference, and the arrangement did what those arrangements usually do.
Did your family run sheep before they ever ran cattle? A lot of northern New Mexico did.
