Over a 20 year period our farm has empowered young women to become strong physically and mentally and become independent thinkers. This empowerment is through women leadership and mentorship in conservation, animal husbandry ethics, and working closely with the animals. Our philosophy of changing the paradigm of livestock management during our climate crisis with a critically endangered landrace allows these women to be part of a solution to a dyer problem. Our farm has used the sheep to mentor these young women in how to think about animals and their ability to heal us, and to take care and consider our actions as we interact with them and the world. I have seen how empowered they become in their own bodies physically from all the hard work but mentally and spiritually too. When these women leave to explore other experiences, they leave with conviction to be able to make a difference and it strengthens a coalition of shepherds in this next generation. It is these animals that have given them this. It’s beautiful to watch.
