SAV Theory heifer calf caught my eye while checking mineral feeders. Her dam is the cow with the muddy face we posted semi-recently.

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 - or maybe I should say, functional/productive cows have curves. Curves like this; referred to as “ewe necked” or “high scapula rotation”

Think back to the last lesser-productive cow you had…can you recall if her curves were “opposite” of this (i.e. cresty necked and or the back behind the scapula is even with or even above the scapula)? I know I’ve seen some cows like that before.

We’re no Bonsma experts, but do enjoy learning and making observations. I do encourage you to follow the Bonsma All Breeds Cattle Group (can’t tag it!) if you’re not already.

And when you look at sale ads, remember that the words “maternal function” alongside a cresty-necked photo might just be 🚩 but only, of course, if cows that breed back on time and raise a calf for at least a few years before turning up open are your goal.
