Far Beyond Farm Far Beyond Farm is a private hobby farm in Smithfield Virginia. We have a variety of farm animals along with a small orchard and a few gardens.

Our goal is to share our experience as we grow and hopefully learn of others.

Spring is in the air at the farm. We were hits with some drought and cold so we lost a bit of fruit but the apples , a few peaches and 1 cherry seem to have survived. Blackberries are coming in strong and the figs are starting to recover from the cold. I. The meantime, the baby chicks are getting huge. I love the hairdo on my Easter Eggers.

As a break from baby chick spam the goaty girls have an exciting announcement. Come June they will have a new "friend"....

As a break from baby chick spam the goaty girls have an exciting announcement. Come June they will have a new "friend". He may look cute and cuddly now but this boy is the future of our herd. In the first picture he is the one standing. In the second picture he is the one jumping up for cuddles. Should be fun when he is a smelly buck. Excited for Inferno Almost A Gentleman (need to confirm name) to join our herd. Cant wait to see the color he will add. We have mostly light colored with some moonspot girls so his dark color with large white spotting should be an interesting mix. The last picture is our current girls...and one wether.

I love my baby chicks but I cannot wait until it is obvious who is what. As a first time chick owner I am overanalyzing...

My babies are too cute. Ignoring the one that has no tail feathers (supposedly sign of a rooster). On the other hand I do think Dicksie (one with big white head) is a girl. They are getting big so fast but finally come over for snacks instead of running from me.

Moved the girls to the barn in a bigger brooder today. They are happy because they can run around. Really questioning Dicksies (dark barred rock with white head) gender as all the others are still hiding and she(?)jumps in my hand and checks everything out before the rest will come out. May end up being Richard but loved either way. Going through the ugly duckling stage as feathers come in but still have a few cutie patooties in there hiding under their big sisters.

First time with baby chicks. Was planning to start them in the barn tack room with a heat lamp but weather and power outages changed that. Only coming up on a week. Currently planning on keeping them in the house in their plastic box till they outgrow it and then moving them to a dog crate I. The tack room of the barn. From there we have three older ladies to introduce to let them loose together. What age would you move them to the barn and how would you introduce them to the original 3. Also. When can I let them start having supervised outdoor play time?

Just hanging out with my goaties. Someone forgot to tell the brown one with the big white face and sweet personality he was supposed to go to freezer camp 😲. Oh well. Things happen and you get repurposed for other jobs 😬. (why is he one of my friendliest goats).
