Dusty Roots Homestead

Dusty Roots Homestead We are a small hobby homestead that began with our love for animals and a flock of 8 chickens about 10 years ago.

We have continued to grow animal by animal ever since. We raise chickens & are currently building our ND goat herd.

⚠️ The FUN part of having chickens during the summer 🥴 Monk was out gathering eggs yesterday & found a No-No Stick in the Maran nest box! Came to get me and we were able to safely relocate him (with a belly full of eggs) as a warning.

We will be giving away 1 dozen eggs to 3 separate winners. Winners will be announced on May 1st!

🙋🏻‍♀️ Why choose farm fresh eggs? Well, let’s start with the “bloom”. Fresh eggs are covered in a natural layer called the bloom that protects the egg from bacteria and keeps it fresher longer without being refrigerated. All of our eggs are collected daily and left unwashed which keeps that bloom intact for longer protection. Farm fresh eggs also usually have more vibrant yolks, firmer whites and richer flavor. Store bought eggs are washed with detergents in order to meet food safety standards, which removes that natural bloom requiring them to be refrigerated immediately. Also, after processing, transporting and shelving they are likely weeks old before you purchase them.
We get asked a lot “are fresh eggs more nutritious?”. Our response to that is most store bought eggs come from hens in a tight run, commercial setting with little to no free range and a standardized diet. Whereas backyard or pasture raised hens usually enjoy a more varied diet. They are given a balanced feed while also having access to forage, bugs, plants, etc. This lifestyle can lead to eggs with increased vitamins & higher omega-3 levels. Healthy hens are happy hens.

✋🏼 Now, we are NOT “anti store bought egg” folks. We simply favor the fresh egg taste. We say all that just to spread a little knowledge to what you’re getting when you support your backyard homesteaders.
