Thank you to everyone asking and checking in on DD. Although it’s not the post I want to make I’m ready to share an update.

Tuesday at 3 am Denise went into labor. Since she’s a first calf heifer I waited a textbook hour with no calf parts showing before I got the ob glove on and went in to see what was going on. I found one leg. Then worked another leg. The calf wasn’t moving. Couldn’t find the head. I was able to ID them as rear legs and as soon as I located the tail facing up I was positive of orientation so I was ready to pull.

There in our barn at 4 am just her and I, pitch black outside and a warm well lighted stall, we worked together to get the calf out. Denise is not always the friendliest to everyone but she is an absolute pet for me. I never needed to restrain her which is a testament to our trust bond, countless hours of training, and the docile calm genetics we selected. We worked together patiently with contractions and got the calf out safely.

Sadly as I had suspected the calf had passed. She was a beautiful wild red 30 lb heifer calf with a perfect white star on her chest. With the help of a necropsy and phone advice from my long-time Dexter breeding mentors we were able to determine the fetus had a fatal congenital birth defect. She had passed on her way into the birth canal. Nothing I could have possibly done to save her and the rare condition was a random error during embryonic development not caused by genetics. It was just bad luck and a burned “first pancake”. We are confident to repeat the breeding when Denise is ready.

🤎 It’s never easy on the Rough Diamond Ranch. Farming aint easy. All the quotes and tears grieving this one. My face has been puffier than her rear end. However my vet tech skills and confidence in myself as a first-generation, self-taught, urban, female, cattle rancher have most definitely leveled the f**k up! And girl I RAN toward the battle call of “COWGIRL UP!!!” to those who can relate 🤎

Bright side now we get to see DD the double D with an udder and she’s everything we all knew she could be.

We’ve been watching heifer princess Denise round the clock in the calving pen. T minus two days past due and counting. Tonight she is looking a little closer to releasing the hostage.. Lick lick lick stay with me brush me scratch my belly - DD

We have sold nearly 3,000 eggs this year!

Sadly the 2026 egg season is coming to an end. It is time to close the waitlist and start decreasing order size for regulars. I will continue to keep you all informed about egg status on pickup days.

The real flex is owning your time. Time to dote over your children. Time to plant an organic victory garden. Time for hobbies that pay you back. Time to exercise and be a healthy role model. The real trad wife doesn’t identify as a trad wife. She just knows that anything she grows or cooks will be better than anything she can buy.
