Meet the faces behind Harris Homeplace!

As a current 5th (Mike) and 6th (Josh) generation farm in the Northwest part of Chatham County, our family has spent many years on what we call "The Homeplace."

With hopefully the 7th Generation currently in training we aim to bring your family the same clean, healthy meats that we ourselves eat.

In 1998, Mike drew a line in the sand. No more chemicals, lower inputs, and better grazing management. That decision and continued research eventually led us to South Poll cattle as we continued our journey down the, what is now known as "regenerative," path.

In recent years we have continued to change and adapt with the addition of pigs, chickens, and expanding to selling meat directly to families like yours.

We are excited for what the future may hold and are grateful for all the support!

One of the keys of our grazing management is the animal impact!

It's always amazing to see how they can really knock an area out, especially when it is full of the diversity that you see on the left.

We bring about that acute stress with our grazing and then follow it up with ample rest and watch it regrow. When that happens there's a lot of good things that happen in the soil.

This is why we don't need fertilizer. The natural system can produces that effect itself!

We get this quite often, "Why aren't you certified organic?"

With practices that align with many of those standards and beyond those standards it seems like it would be an easy decision.

But, is it worth it is really the question.

For us, that answer is no.

Did you know the certification is expensive? So we would pay to have someone oversee small details of our operation. It would limit what we can do. Maybe we will need something that's "non-organic" at some point? Probably not, but why shut the door? Bringing other hands and eyes and requirements and PAYING for that restriction, no thank you.

INSTEAD, we could do a very transparent job of just informing our customers of what we do and use and what they are actually getting. Be an open book. That's exactly what we have decided to do. We aim to build the trust with the people that buy their food from us. "Know your farm, know your food" isn't just lip service.

This year, we'll be joined by Lance Gunderson from Regen Ag Lab to learn about making better management decisions to improve soil health and profitability.

We'll also hear from farms around the Carolinas about the latest tools they're using to manage nutrients, integrate cover crops, and reach customers with nutrient dense foods.

The winner of the 2026 Carolinas Leopold Conservation Award will be announced at the event by Sand County Foundation!

As always, we'll share a regeneratively raised meal, this year with beef from Harris Homeplace Farm!

South Polls can do a lot on a little.

A great tool as we continue to regenerate this pasture.

This area was clearcut and put into pasture, then propped up with inputs until we started grazing it. Interesting to see it go through it's natural processes to actually build productive soil for a grassland. It's certainly not pretty, but it's improving and the South Polls are helping us get there.

It's a jungle out there!

Tons of species of forage for our steers and big time volume as we hit an area that has rested most all the growing season.

Those South Polls are crushing it and they're going to bring a nutrient-dense, tender, flavorful beef when it's all said and done.

Oh how we neglect knowing the hands that raise our food.

"Who cares... if it comes from the store it's fine... I don't care anyway"

The common apathy towards our food is a big reason why we are in the mess we are in. Once we trusted systems we didn't interact with we lost the nourishment, the satisfaction, and the enjoyment of our food.

That's alright though.

You can meet us! We'll tell you everything you want to know (and probably more) about your food. We even offer hand-delivery!
