Here is a short vineyard lesson to start your weekend! Go lady bugs!
Early this season marks the end of the frost cycle and the occurrence of “set,” the term used for the natural process that transforms grape blossoms into tiny grape berries. At this stage, we begin to gain some insight into the potential harvest, although it is still too early for definitive predictions.

All two-year-old vines are now given special attention. On each vine, the strongest cane is selected and tied to its stake while other growth is removed. The vineyards receive their final grooming as we disc once more to eliminate the remaining w**ds that can deplete soil nutrients or deprive vines of moisture during summer. Particular focus is given to the morning glory, a notorious vineyard w**d that can strangle vines if not properly managed.

Insect pests such as aphids and leafhoppers must also be controlled at this time. Rather than using insecticides, I prefer natural control methods and therefore release thousands of ladybugs into the vineyards. The ladybug, an effective predator of aphids, efficiently eliminates them. While the ladybugs perform their task, Vineyard Managers are entrusted with the unromantic duty of removing w**ds from around the base of each vine. In the era of Sam’s grandfather Samuele, this task was accomplished by hand hoeing.

With an average of 450 vines per acre, Samuele would have needed to hand hoe over 25,000 vines in our Le Gemelle Vineyards in the Sonoma Valley. Sam's father, August, often mentioned that hand hoeing builds character. 🐞🌞🍇🚜
