MONDAY's GRIDLOCK IN THE BIRTH CANAL
5:56AM - Anna was clearly in labor
7:02 AM - Her water broke
Anna paced around the stall and scratched at the floor, as her contractions came and went. She laid down twice, but immediately got back up. While standing up, she did push a few times when her contractions kicked in. However, after a while, she clearly was not progressing. Twice, she stopped and looked me dead in the eye, then came over to me briefly, before resuming her pacing. Something wasn't right.
I called one of my stellar mentors, Crystal Criswell of Melwood Farm St. Croix Hair Sheep whose midwifery skills reached all the way from Ohio, into our Middle, Tennessee barn. Crystal advised too much time had passed, it was now AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, and that I needed to "Glove up, l**e up and get in there!"
Cutting to the chase - As Crystal verbally guided me to feel around, I was able to discern that I felt two lambs, both in the proper presentation - front legs forward, heads forward. Crystal even advised me to feel for teeth, as confirmation that the heads were forward. TEETH confirmed!
Crystal said "Start pulling, wiggling their legs a bit as you pull!" So that's what I did. One at a time, I pulled Anna's twin daughters out. I guess they were in a race to be Valentino's first offspring to enter the world!
I wasn't sure if they were going to be alive or not. But thankfully, both girls were alive! Whew!! What a save! What an intense experience!! THANK YOU AUNT CRYSTAL!!! :0) You saved our lambs and you saved Anna too!
So for any new shepherds out there reading this... if I could do this, just know you can too! Thankfully, I had the necessary shoulder length gloves on hand and a gallon of l**e - as a just in case. Crystal also advised I go back in a 3rd time to check there wasn't a triplet still inside. Negative. Just Twins.
Here is a just-pulled shot, and a quickie pic from this AM!
