I hope you have been well!

Life has been so busy the past few weeks as we have been "gearing up" for the "slow down" season. I have been prepping behind the scenes in order to launch ourselves forward into next Spring ready to go! 💕🐣✨️☀️

The weather was amazing today, so I thought I'd FINALLY spend some time trying to get updated photos for yall to see how our quail have been progressing!

Here are our Jumbo Rotkopf Pansy Coturnix Quail!

They are literally MASSIVE and turn 5 weeks old this upcoming Tuesday.

I am obsessed with their calm nature and stunning feather patterns!

These quail are feather sexable, with the males having a brown head and chest, while the females have spotted chests.

I can't wait to see how big their eggs are going to be once they start laying in a few more weeks!

What's the scoop!?!

I want to hear all the deets....how often do you truly deep clean your incubator?

Thorough clean after every single use?
A quick wipe down?
At the end of the hatching season?
Wait, they are supposed to be sanitized?

One of the largest aspects of creating your own breed is accepting that it is going to take a lot of patience.

On average, it can take about 7 generations to solidify a project breed!

This a small batch of the BC1 Generation of our Bluebell Sugarcubes, which is technically only the second generation.

In this generation you can see a lot of different gene combinations pop up.
It's important to select which birds will make the cut in order to start locking down the different traits you want in your finalized birds.

This hatch was a great example of those hard decisions to be made and the surprises that will pop up in the second generation.

With our Bluebell Sugarcubes, we are ONLY choosing to move forward with Blues and Splashes.
I don't think any blacks will pop up with our current cross, but if they do we will be keeping a few of those as well.

Two of these chicks hatched with the Red Gene(referring technically to the color Mahogany or extension allele), making them automatic "culls" for the Bluebells.

Even though they are super cute, they will not progress the breed toward our goals.

This does not mean we are literally culling them, they just won't be in our Bluebell Sugarcube F3 Generation that we hatch out next year.

So as of now, we have potentially what looks like two really dark blues(🙏💕) and Silver who is growing into a beautiful splash.

Looks like more BC1 Hatches will need to happen so that we have enough birds to continue on to the F3 Generation!

We are ecstatic to share with you all that we have added the STUNNING and RARE
Coronation Sussex to our Homestead!

A HUGE shout out to Rockwood on the Hill Farm who has been such a pleasure to work with and get these beautiful birds/hatching eggs from!

I can't wait to watch them growout and be able to offer y'all this sweetheart of a breed come Spring 2027!

✨️If you have never heard of them, please look them up.
They look as regal as they sound!
Also this photo doesn't do the eggs nearly enough justice. They are pink/mauve in color and some have very lovely heavy blooms!
