I love a good seed company!

This Juneteenth, we wanted to talk about the importance of seed sovereignty. By supporting Black/BIPOC seed companies and growers, you are helping to counteract the long history of agricultural inequity and discrimination that led to the widespread loss of Black farmland throughout the 20th century. Buying from these companies helps to preserve culturally meaningful seeds, and ensures that communities can continue to improve their local food systems and economic empowerment.

This list is just a handful of black seed companies that are working to preserve African Diaspora seeds, food sovereignty, and support a resilient food system for generations to come.

Comment any other seed companies not on this list! 🌱

Acquilegia. Columbine. Here are seeds saved from a lovely yellow variety which is more commonly found in the highlands of the American west than in Tidewater Virginia. I do love yellow so I purchased seed from a Prairie based seed company. Planted as an understory of Dogwoods , it thrives here. Growing beside Acquilegia candensis which is native to Virginia and the variety I sold last spring at River Street Market. Beautiful spring color, seeding now.

Morning lavender harvest. Too bad there’s not a scratch and sniff option here. What a fabulous aroma! Drying for tea.

Montpelier mamas aren’t discriminating. Your baby, my baby anybody’s baby. Our turkey friend here hatched some ducklings and readily adopted them as her own. Don’t get too close or she will peck you like a mama who won’t surrender her offspring.
