Our beautiful Phoebe has tried 4 times in the last 2 summers to hatch out some ducklings. Every time it seemed to be going well the eggs would stop being viable or get taken by pests, it never failed that something would happen.
Today she hatched out a single Muscovy duckling. I can already tell she’s gonna be a good mama ❤️

They don’t tell you about the last meals you will make them. About that last trip to lay in the sun. About the baths you’ll give them because their feathers are soiled. That they’ll lash out at you because they’re hurting and don’t understand. That you’ll watch them struggle to stand or even stay upright because their little bodies just don’t want to work anymore. That you’ll watch them start to lose that spark and start to give up.

Today my heart is breaking, tomorrow he will take those pieces with him. While I may be hurting here earth side, he’ll be whole, and at peace. Free to be a duck and do duck things free of pain. It never makes the decision easier, but eventually, it’s what will help heal the hole they leave in your heart when they go.

Mixed breed ducklings looking for new ponds!

We have fawn runner, mallard, swedish and pekin hens. Dads are either khaki campbell or mallard. Straight run only.

Our imprinted gosling is now big enough to hop the fence to come look for us! We had to put up a shield so she doesn’t hurt herself or make a mess of our main level.

Hi everyone!
As former Easter ducks, Sandor and Mr. Shuffles would like to ask that you please, please, please do your research and really think about what goes into caring for a duck or chicken before you buy the cute fuzzy little babies in the bin at your local farm store!

If you find yourself in over your head with your birds please find a local chicken/duck/farm group here on Facebook and ask for help or rehoming. Please do not dump them at a duck pond or creek!!! Domestic ducks cannot fly, so escaping predators is extremely difficult for them in the wild.

Sandor and Mr. Shuffles are 2 of 7 ducks we took in from a couple who bought ducklings for their granddaughter, with the intention of releasing them into their backyard creek when they were grown. Thankfully, they contacted their local city park (who has our number) asking if they wanted to take them. 5 of them still live here at the aviary and 2 went to a new home.
Mr shuffles had mobility issues from the start and most certainly would have made a meal for a predator.

A little appreciation for our some of our handsome boys.
We’ve only been in a situation where we’ve had to rehome 2 of our drakes, and that was what was best for them, and the rest of our flock. Our drake to hen ratio is awful, but these boys have moved into a seperated part of our run (nicknamed The Monastery) temporarily before moving to their new pen right across the path from their current home.
Our aviary is home to 16 Drakes total, 4 of which are special needs (Mr. Shuffles lives in our mud room with his harem)
