A shrub is also known as a sipping vinegar, which is a sweet, tangy, or herbal drink with vinegar as a base; usually an apple cider vinegar or a white wine vinegar (although we use red wine vinegars in our shrubs a lot as well), fruit, and sugar.

There’s a bunch of different ways to make them from Rufus Estes way of boiling and adding the sugar after, to how we make them which is making an oleo sacrum and then slow steeping to extract as much flavor as possible.

The word “shrub” itself comes from the arabic word sharāb from which we also get things like sherbet, and syrup. When shrubs got to Europe they started mixing vinegar with spirits which gave it an acidic taste. Then they just started mixing citrus with lemon juice with spirits like rum and calling them shrubs to make themselves feel better about sailors getting drunk on rum punch, essentially.
When shrubs made their way to the States they started making shrubs with vinegar again because America was a bunch of broke boys that couldn’t get citrus.

Fast forward a few centuries and here we are with Basilisk Venom: a tomato, basil, ginger shrub with some heat on the residual. You can drink it as is, add some bubble water to make a soda, mix it in a cocktail or mocktail, or add to olive oil for a dressing. We have all types of tasty s**t on our internet spot.

Cheers to the future.

We’re dropping 4 new flavors for Fall ’25 and this drop is f**king sick! Inspired by our roleplaying games (tabletop and otherwise). Each syrup and shrub is inspired by a classic RPG archetype: Fighter (HP Boost), Cleric (MP Boost), Mage (Blood of My Enemies), and Rogue (Basilisk Venom). Using the best whole ingredients, we’re confident these would be an excellent addition to your game sessions.
So confident, in fact, we’re having a little contest for those 21+ in the Pittsburgh area. Let us level up your next game night with quality cocktails and/or mocktails catered by our in-house mixologists. Visit the flavorpourn.com and roll for flavor!
