Couldn’t be more impressed with how easy these Pineywoods calve! 4 beautiful calves this year, not a one required pullin. Can’t beat these self-sufficient heritage cattle!

Fresh grass, shade, and running ground water… couldn’t ask for access to a better paddock for these hungry animals. Grateful for neighbors who let us graze their grass free of charge, and to be lucky enough to call this beautiful mountain our home!

Hope everyone else’s Memorial Day weekend is off to as good of a start as ours is! Here at the farm we’re feeling grateful for sacrifices made to preserve the freedom we enjoy in this country. Before serving overseas, I took our bubble of safety and privilege for granted. Now I do my best to slow down and stay thankful for even the simple things, like the opportunity to safely spend my morning in the pasture with our flock. Everyone stay safe this weekend, and take a moment remember those that sacrificed their lives to preserve our freedom 🇺🇸 rest in peace Andrew Carpener https://www.facebook.com/andrew.p.carpenter?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Couldn’t ask for better behaved animals! This pup is barely 9mo old, but treats knee-high hot wire like the great wall of china. Grateful for dogs and ruminants that respect polywire… makes rotational grazing to keep them and the land healthy so much easier!

We were blessed with access to a neighbor’s pasture just down the road, and the 14 lucky sheep we chose to “taste test” the paddock are loving life! Nothing better than fresh grass, a cold pond, and Straight Mountain views. Can’t wait to see what this new property produces!

Sell the lawnmower, buy ruminants. This beats mowing the grass any day!

Love finding these dung beetles in the pasture. Best employees we have: 24/7 manure management, fly control, and topsoil rejuvenation all in a single tiny hands-free package!

Just when I think I’ve finally got them attached to the flock, here they come running! Our Texas Heeler Fly has no complaints though… perfect opportunity to show off her herding skills, and she is more than happy to take all the credit for these sheep rounding themselves up 😅

Despite a lean winter, Cowpen Creek Tbone is still a sight to behold! Can’t wait to get him back on grass and packin on the pounds. These Yeller Griffins are somethin else!

Got our Conways seperated from our Griffins yesterday, each back in their own dedicated breeding paddocks. Love seeing these cattle in the woods!

Thought we were done feeding hay, but a few of our heifers discovered a gap in the barbed wire… so now we’re back in the overgrazed winter paddock feeding round bales until the fence is fixed, and THESE CATTLE ARE HUNGRY!

I must have jinxed us last summer when I bragged that our sheep had never produced a bottle lamb… We lost our favorite ewe 2 weeks ago, but she left behind beautiful twins that have excelled on the bottle and as of this morning have officially graduated to the pasture! Thankfully, we’ve got some of the best LGDs a shepherd could ask for keeping a close eye on these two girls.

Training day for our new lambs, who’ve never been corralled or heard our Pavlovian bell before. Since we don’t have a trained herding dog yet, we condition our sheep to associate this ringing with grain. Once they get the idea, it only takes a handful of grain a few times per year to keep them conditioned. Ring the bell, and as long as they’re within ear shot they file into the corral for sorting like they’re getting paid to do it.

Our Pineywoods love privet almost as much as the Blackbelly do! Won’t be long and we’ll need new woodline to clean up.

03/21/2024

Cleaning up our back fenceline, the EASY way. American Blackbelly sheep tear up invasive privet, poison oak, and other undesirables that most livestock turn their nose up at. What used to be a dense and inhospitable woodline is now open, accessible, and steadily being repopulated by native fauna previously shaded out by thick privet hedge.
