Rules for all birds that come on my property.
1. Instant bug treatment. (Unless I remembered to ask the breeder if they did a bug treatment recently & what they used. Then I still may do a bug treatment anyway.)
A good thing to do before buying, is take a list of questions with you to ask, so you don't forget. Things like diet, any recent flock illnesses, temperament, things like that!
2. Quarantine! Because I want to monitor for any other issues the birds may have. Even if it looks healthy. And I don't want to expose my flock to any hidden issues. (Quarantine between 30-40+ days or 3-4weeks).
Moving to a new home stresses chickens, which often causes hidden respiratory infections or parasites to flare up within the first couple of weeks.
Isolation stops mites, lice, worms, and contagious diseases from wiping out your current birds.
Best Practices for Quarantine
Distance: Keep the new birds at least 30 to 40 feet away from your main coop, ideally downwind.
Separate gear: Use completely separate feeders, waterers, and cleaning tools for the new chickens.
Hygiene: Always care for your established flock first, then tend to the quarantined birds. Wash your hands and change your shoes or clothes afterward to avoid cross-contamination.
Daily checks: Watch for clear eyes, normal breathing, healthy droppings, and active behavior.
