A quick update from the pawpaw grafting workshop at Stuart Park!
I'm happy to report that the grafting was a success, and many of the grafts are already pushing healthy new growth. It's always exciting to see those buds break and know the graft has taken.
The trees were grafted over to the cultivar 'Sunflower', a productive nativar from Chanute, Kansas known for its larger fruit and excellent flavor. If all goes well, these newly grafted trees should begin producing pollen and fruit within the next few years, helping expand the pawpaw grove for future visitors to enjoy.
Thank you to everyone who attended, observed, asked questions, and helped make the workshop a success (especially Walt). It's rewarding to share these skills and contribute to the preservation and improvement of these unique native fruit trees.
Be sure to check back on the grove as the season progresses. The new growth is already looking promising!

We have a great selection of Che trees available in 1-gallon RootMaker® containers! Most are Darrow, with a few Hwang K*m #4 selections available.
All trees are grafted onto Osage orange rootstock, creating exceptionally tough, vigorous trees with excellent drought tolerance and very few pest or disease issues. The fruit has a unique flavor often described as a blend of fig, mulberry, and watermelon. Che trees also remain a manageable size, making them a great choice for home orchards and food forests.
As RootMaker® Certified Growers, we use containers designed to air-prune roots and encourage a dense, fibrous root system rather than circling roots. This results in healthier trees that establish faster, experience less transplant shock, and are better equipped to find water and nutrients after planting.
We are a small, family-owned, licensed nursery in Oklahoma. We collect local seed, grow our own rootstocks, and perform all grafting ourselves to ensure quality from start to finish.
💲 $50 each

WOW! What an absolutely amazing grafting workshop last Sunday at Stuart Park!

I want to give a massive thank you to everyone who came out. Getting to meet so many Facebook friends in person and making a ton of new ones made the day incredibly special.

Our grafters got plenty of hands-on experience, and we ended up making over a dozen grafts of “Sunflower”onto trees in the patch! Sunflower is a nativar originating just up the road in Chanute, Kansas, it’s going to boost the patch's fruit quality, size, and pollination without negatively impacting the local genetics.

Speaking of the patch, it was much more intensive than we originally thought! Early that morning, Walt and I took some time to explore the Pre-Columbian garden area at the Gilcrease Museum property to see the original planting of pawpaw trees. We actually stumbled upon a massive surprise: Dragon Arum (Dracunculus vulgaris) growing right there in the patch. We think it may have been intentionally included as a brilliant companion planting to attract flies and carrion beetles, the primary pollinators for pawpaws! This was a total first for me and a fascinating look at potential companion planting strategies. (Thank you Andy for the botanical education on dragon arum as well)
As if the day wasn't good enough, Walt completely surprised me with a handmade painting by local artist Kiyota Crawford. Thank you so much, Walt and Kiyota! I absolutely treasure it.

To all of our attendees: Please stay in touch! I plan to update everyone as your grafts progress, and I am always here to answer any grafting questions you have.

A quick favor: Walt sent out an email earlier this week asking for some feedback. If you have just a moment, please reply with a few words about your experience! Your feedback helps us so much for the future of the park and future workshops.

Thank you all again for making it such a memorable Sunday!

-Nick

As the planting season is coming to an end, we still have plenty of pecan and pawpaw trees. We also provide custom orchard design, tree planting and bulk order packaging. If you’d like to reserve trees for fall planting please send us a message!

The pawpaw grafting workshop at Stuart Park is less than a week away — Sunday, May 17th from 9:00–11:30 AM.
All workshop slots have been filled, but everyone is welcome to come observe as I demonstrate the essentials of pawpaw grafting near the old Pre-Columbian Garden at Gilcrease. I plan to cover cleft grafting along with a few modified bark grafting techniques.
Free Parking:
Gilcrease Museum North Parking Lot
Access Information:
Gilcrease Museum Road (GMR) is currently under construction and cannot be accessed from the south. The north parking lot remains open, with the nearest intersection at Pine St. & GMR.
The entrance to the lot is located just south of the intersection, and that section of construction remains open to public access.
Stuart Park is located north of the parking lot below the main grounds. The trail begins with a somewhat steep descent on stone steps equipped with a railing.
Follow the trail west past the pond, Joan’s Garden, and the grizzly bear sculpture. Continue west past the service road leading up to the museum toward the site of the old Pre-Columbian Garden and pawpaw grove. The walk is approximately 1/4 mile.
Please note: the trail is not handicap accessible at this time.

Weather conditions have been changing daily, which is fairly typical for May. Participants should come prepared with appropriate protective measures for working in wooded areas.
