Great info for this time of year!
Maintenance Monday: Buck care! With breeding season here, we thought quick review of the masculine half of a dairy herd was in order. Bucks need access to high quality mineral all year round for his own health as well as the health of his reproductive tract. Deworm, if needed, 30 days prior to intended start of
your season and if in a deficient area, copper and selenium boosters 6 weeks prior. Getting a buck in a healthy weight prior to breeding is important, especially for bucks who go off feed during rut. They will need those reserves to back up the energy they put into impressing the ladies. Plenty of clean water is vital to keeping them active and many appreciate a bucket of warm water or electrolyte water during this active time. Hooves should be trimmed at the beginning of the season and maintained throughout to give him the solid surface he needs for mounting without pain or risk of a fall. If your buck is older or has low fertility, sometimes a weekly dose of vitamins A, D, E, and B12 gel can boost motility. Lastly, a frequent oversight is checking your buck’s collar. Buck necks swell with their hormone flush and that well fitted collar from the summer may be too tight now. Make sure his collar isn’t too tight or potentially switch to a halter for handling him during rut and remove the collar altogether.
