It is HOT, but a well-designed and well-tended garden can still feel lush and abundant through the peak of a Houston summer. 🌿

During this garden check-in, I harvested butterfly pea flowers and tended to rosemary, lemon verbena, chives, okra, and many other plants thriving throughout the garden. I also planted butternut squash and more peppers, while leaving room for cool-season plants once temperatures ease up.

Garden design creates the foundation. Ongoing coaching helps busy families know what to plant, tend, harvest, and prepare for next so they can enjoy a beautiful, productive garden in every season.

Swapping pumpkin spice lattes for Pumpkin Spice jalapeños. 😂🌶️

This rapid-fire planting session included butternut squash seedlings and Dancing with Smurfs tomatoes from Nelson Water Gardens tucked into the shade of her basil plants. I also added HEIRLOOM SOILS leaf mold compost from Sienna Mulch to give everything a good start.

I’ve been encouraging most of my clients to wait for cooler weather before planting, but this was a small exception. With a heat index of 110°, I wore the breeziest dress I own, drank lots of water, and worked as early and efficiently as I could.

We may be preparing for fall, but it is definitely not soup weather yet! Just a fun peek at what I’ve been up to in my clients’ gardens lately. 🌱

There’s still so much growing at Sienna Mulch despite the extreme heat! Today’s check-in included trimming back what was finished for the season, making room for what’s ahead, and refreshing one bed with HEIRLOOM SOILS The Works. I can’t wait to plant these Vego Garden beds up when it cools down just a touch.

I also loved browsing their selection of garden favorites, including David’sGardenSeeds®️, MicroLife, Nelson Plant Food, shroomz new life, and The Original Pot Head, just to name a few.

Amy has been taking such good care of her garden, and it shows!

After harvesting herbs for frozen herb bombs and herbed butter, there were still plenty of cherry tomatoes and shish*to peppers waiting to be picked.

Her garden got a nice cleanup and will continue producing into fall until it’s time to plant cool-season vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

After a garden consultation and before settling in to work on a new design, I stopped by Enchanted Forest Richmond for a little Fall garden inspiration.

The nursery is filling up with tomato starts, pepper plants, herbs, and flowers for the season ahead. It may still feel like summer outside, but signs of fall are starting to arrive!

Back to school, and back to garden check-ins! 🌱📚

The last couple of weeks have been full of getting my own kids ready for a new school year, while also making the rounds to check on my clients’ summer gardens.

Harvesting what’s ready, pruning, checking for pests, feeding the soil, and figuring out what each garden needs as we get closer to fall.

Houston gardens can go through a lot over the summer, and these check-ins give us a chance to catch problems early, tidy things up, and help the garden stay productive through the season.

It felt good to spend this week back in several of my clients’ gardens, especially as we start looking ahead to fall.

Fall garden season is right around the corner, and I have some fun projects coming up that I can’t wait to share!

I love including flowers alongside edible gardens.

This swallowtail spent quite a while visiting the zinnias, and it was such a joy to watch.

Flowers do so much more than add color. They provide nectar for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators that help keep the garden thriving.

I’m especially excited because I have several pollinator gardens on the drawing board for this fall. I can’t wait to watch them fill with butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds over the seasons ahead.

Reposting this garden check-in because it feels especially fitting this time of year.

Houston has been putting our gardens to the test.

This is when all of the planning starts to pay off. Healthy soil, the right plants, and good irrigation all work together so the garden can handle the heat with a lot less intervention.

By the time July rolls around, I want the garden doing most of the heavy lifting.

These check-ins are usually just a chance to make a few seasonal adjustments, harvest what’s ready, and enjoy what’s growing.

And while these gardens are carrying us through the hottest weeks of the year, we’re already planning for fall.

My calendar is filling quickly as we design new gardens and prepare existing ones for our favorite growing season. Fall may feel far away, but this is when those gardens begin.

Just a happy garden designer and coach spending the afternoon in a garden bursting with life.

The harvest is exciting, but watching gardeners grow in confidence is even better.

A little Secret Garden magic at Camp H-Town.

We spent the morning talking about what plants need to grow before the campers potted up a plant, planted a few seeds, and decorated their flower pots to make them their own.

Some even gave their plants names. Their new plant friends will stay in their rooms for the rest of camp before heading home with them, and I love that they got to enjoy them all week long.

Thank you to Camps by KT for inviting me to be part of this special experience Four Seasons Hotel Houston, Sienna Mulch for donating HEIRLOOM SOILS, and Danyette from Two Be Wed for volunteering to help with our sessions. It was a joy to share a little gardening with these wonderful campers, and I hope their plants continue to remind them of the fun they had together.

Thank you again for inviting me to help enrich the kids’ camp experience.
