The Oktoberfest is not a beer festival, it is an anniversary party that got out of hand 🇩🇪

In October 1810 the Bavarian crown prince married Princess Therese, and the whole of Munich was invited to a horse race on a meadow outside the walls. It went well enough that they did it again the next year, and have not stopped since.

The field is still called the Theresienwiese, after the bride. Locals call it the Wiesn, and that is what they call the festival too — say Oktoberfest in Munich and you have marked yourself as a visitor.

Most of it now runs in September, because the weather in October is worse. And nothing is poured until the mayor has driven the tap into the first barrel and shouted O'zapft is.

It is one city's local festival. It is not a German national event, and Germans outside Bavaria will tell you so at some length.
