This Dairy Sweet Life We are the L’Esperance Family and have been farming since 2012! We milk about 150 cows in 2 locations in Swanton, VT.

We have a mid-sized maple sugaring operation and sell a variety products. Our latest project is The Dairy Sweet Creamery.

This is another step in moving our baby chicks into the larger coop! In order to acclimate them and avoid fighting I had put the small cage into the shed next to the coop. It’s been almost a week like this so the big chickens can see and hear the babies.
Today I placed the small cage into the big coop after offering plenty of snacks for distraction. Hopefully tonight I can open the door and set them free. Sidenote, I’m not a chicken person and have probably overthought this entirely! 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Making hay while the sun shines! ☀️
Square bales have served us well over the years. When we first started the farm we did all our own crops. We spent the first few summers making hundreds of bales to sell to boost our cash flow. Now that our operation has expanded we keep the bales and use them for heifers, calves, and any fresh or sick cows.
Square baling is done when the weather is hot and dry. The grass is mowed and then tedded (spread out) to dry. It is raked into large wind rows and run through the baler. Square bales are easy to stack and store but must be kept dry! 🐮🥛☀️

Each time I mow the lawn the dump trucks come out! They scoop up the lawn clippings and build “bunks” to store their feed. The cows love when the kids are “chopping”. The trucks come rolling through the barn and everyone gets a little treat! 🥰🐮🥛☀️

Our original home farm was built in 1975. A tie stall facility that held around 60 animals! The original structure still stands and continues to be where we house and milk our animals. The barn has had many additions over the years and the yard looks entirely different now.

We continue to milk in the tie stall facility and have a few “switch pens” for cows who struggle in the stalls. We have more than doubled the size of the milking herd since taking over and have added on additional facilities for our calves and heifers.

For us, growth has equaled progress in many ways! 🐮🥛

Our first cut off the home farm was finished last night. We covered the bunk this morning!
Our bunk is a paved slab with concrete walls. We line the walls with plastic before the bunk is filled with feed. Then we cover the top with plastic and tires. The goal is to keep any water and air from getting in and spoiling the feed.
