Important and helpful info from my friend at Blue Jaye Acreβs !
Now that the rainy days have subsided we are heading into summer. Here are some ways to keep your rabbitry cool and happy this summer!
- Shade and protection from the sun (at all times of day)
- Frozen vegetables(some rabbits even like ice cubes)
- Stone/ Slate/ Tile in a shady area
- Freeze water bottles, milk jugs, or jars and place it with them
- Offer AT LEAST 1 water bowl and 1 water bottle. (I find they prefer the water bowl and are more hydrated with it but the water bottle is good backup for those who like to chug them, also keeps it more sanitary)
- Give them veggies/ greens that are moisture rich (even better if you soak them in water or spray water on them)
- Brush regularly, make sure any shedding fur is off
- Mist their ears with cool water (rabbits regulate heat through their ears: this is especially difficult for lop breeds)
- If you have a hutch or barn with a roof, it can be helpful to spray it down with cool water
- Fans are an option as well, can be electric, battery powered, wind operated, etc. (Bonus if you can pair it with a sprinkler to mist the air)
- Press an ice pack or cool towel to their ears
Another important note to keep in mind is that rabbits need ventilation! Especially when itβs summer it gets hot and humid. Ensure the area is well ventilated and clean regularly. Another concern in the heat is fly strike, which can be prevented with natural pest control, clean environment, and proper waste disposal.
