Guess What Chicken Season It Is???
Molting Season!!!

What is Molting in chickens and why does it happen?
Molting is the natural process of shedding old worn feathers and replace them with new healthy feathers.

Molting is a seasonal trigger, with the onset of shorter days light hours. This is when a hen changes from egg production to feather production.

Growing new feathers require an increase in nutrients, so the shift from egg production to feather production.

What are the signs that your chickens are Molting?

If your chickens look like they are sending in an ugly way, then they are in molt! It starts around the neck then moves to their back, breast and then the tail area.

Your chickens will be sore as new feathers start to come through the best skin. They will not want to be handled as much during this time. You will see pointed pin feathers break through the skin.

What to feed Molting chickens

Although, most folks think egg laying season requires an increase in protein, it’s really during molting. Chicken require an increase in protein and amino acids that can be provided through a good quality feed and providing mealworms or diet cakes.

A high protein feed with at least 20% protein and as always clean fresh water. Water is needed during the molt as it supports all bodily functions.

It is almost time to Process the meat birds!
This weekend the Cornish Cross will be 8 wks and the Kosher Kings will be 12 wks.
*** Pull ALL food from the birds the night before!!!

● STEP1 - (At the arena) Things you need to bring:
> Sharp knife and/or Scissors
> Cookie Sheet
> Cutting board
> Hand Towel
> Plastic apron
> Lg Cooler
> Lots of Ice
> Frozen jugs of water
> (Maybe a change of clothes)

● STEP 2 - (At your House) Let them rest in your Ice Cooler for 1-3 days before cutting up your birds! (This makes for a more tender bird.)
*** Make a plan! Count your birds and know how you want to cut and separate the parts before you get started!
> Paper towels, to pat dry your bird.
> Sharp knife and/or Scissors
> Multiple cookies sheets to separate breast, tenders, thighs, drums, and wings. (And bones)
> Vacuum sealer & bags (I use 11 inch bags)
> Marker - count, date, and label your bag
> Freeze

● STEP 3 - Make bone broth!
> Instant Pot (I use 2 carcasses per pot, and have 3 pots going at a time)
> Carrots, Onions, Celery, Garlic, Mushrooms, Peppercorn, Parsley, Basil, Rosemary, Cilantro, Lemon juice, and sea salt
(Really whatever you want to put in it! It can be simple or packed full of flavor!)

● STEP 4 - Brine your meat before you cook it! (At least 4 hours)
> Salt, Sugar, Peppercorn
> Minced Garlic
> Pickle Juice
> Enough water to cover the meat.
