Something beautiful happened in Hollywood this week.

The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge — which just received a record 144 film submissions this year — announced its winners at Sony Pictures Studios. The Best Film? A short called "Don't Forget to Dance." And on top of that, the historic Media Access Awards, founded by Norman Lear back in 1979, officially relaunched this week as The Easterseals Disability Arts & Culture Awards — expanding their mission and opening submissions for the inaugural ceremony this October.

It's a reminder that when the disability community gets to tell its own stories, the results are extraordinary. It's a brand new documentary streaming right now on YouTube that follows three Special Olympics gymnasts — Paige, Liz, and Jenny — on their journey to the USA Games opening this Saturday in Minneapolis. Narrated by Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson East, it's one of those films that quietly makes you rethink what dedication actually looks like.

And then there's Ava — a high school senior from Richfield, Minnesota competing as the youngest gymnast on Team Minnesota this weekend. Her city's mayor just declared an official "Ava Wiederholt Day" in her honor. You can't make this stuff up.

We came across Janeel's story this week and couldn't stop thinking about it.

She's a Special Olympics athlete heading to the USA Games in Minneapolis next week — and when asked what she loves most about competing, she didn't say the medals or the podium. She said it's the peace of being around people who understand her journey. "It brings me peace knowing that I have competitors like me," she said.

She also had a message for athletes who doubt themselves: "You may not think you're the best… but you are."

We came across a story this week that genuinely gave us chills.

John McFall lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident at 19. He went on to become a Paralympic sprinter, then a surgeon, and now he's on track to become the first person with a physical disability to live in orbit — aboard the world's first commercial space station as early as 2027

He called it "a cultural shift" — not just for himself, but for every person with a disability who's ever been told there are limits to what they can do.

There's a story going around about a blind visitor named Kosi who recently took a touch tour of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia — running her hands over life-size bronze statues of the Founding Fathers and reading their posture, their confidence, their character, all through touch.
