The girls got their second dose of FerAppease, momma's and babies. Firecracker seemed almost comatose for a few minutes after I gave her a dose. I wish I had my phone when she was looking so d***y! She was finally starting to graze again by time I started to video. Let the weaning begin!

FerAppease time! This product is known to minimize stress in stressful situations. Both dams and heifer calves got a dose. I will separate them this weekend. This is placed topically on the bridge of nose and forehead by the ears area. Instructions on the box say 10cc split between two locations for cattle, but on line says 5cc for calves split between locations. I already put it on Dandylion's head location prior to the video.

Lonestar Firecracker has to fight off Dandylion for some screen time despite being bigger than she is. Firecracker is exactly one month younger than Dandylion. She was a whopping 77 pounds at birth!

Not Dexters! 🤣 My parents have a small herd of mid sized mini Belted Galloway crosses. They have 3 bulls available. 2 are old enough to go to a new home. One is breeding age, one is 5 months and one is a newborn. They can be steered for pets or raised for home grown beef. The Belted Galloway breed is known to be a healthier beef then commercial breeds! Similar to Dexters in quality. All of these Beltie boys are 25% or more Irish Dexter and 50% or more Belted Galloway. My dad is 83 years old and has been able to safely take care of this gentle breed.

Heifer selection
I decided to lead Dandylion out of her small pen to see how she would react to the open space without her herd around. She really did so well! When looking for a new heifer to add to your herd, look beyond the "A2A2 & homo polled" popularity. This heifer is just what I want in behavior, conformation, teat placement and overall body structure. She is a keeper!

Teaching these two little heifers to take cubes from my fingers. Some patience and a demonstration from Firecracker's momma and finally we got them eating out of my hands. This will help them in the leading part of halter training.

Lonestar Dandylion’s 3rd halter session is going well. Don’t allow your calves to rub their head on you. Don’t brush their forehead either. This encourages bad behavior. She is learning to circle both directions in this 10x10 pen. A small pen is a great place to learn because your calf has no where to go to run off and drag you around. Then I can add more panels to create a larger area for her to learn.

Dandylion and Firecracker are starting their halter training. They come into a small pen to eat away from their moms. I have already been able to gentle them by petting and brushing them. All am doing to start, is slipping the halter on and asking them to give to pressure by turning their heads. Next lesson will be turn their head and take a step in the direction I am turning them. This is low stress on all of us. It's too hot to get any of us worked up.
