In 2020, real estate agent Ashley Scott and entrepreneur Renee Walters led nineteen African American families to purchase nearly 97 acres near Toomsboro, Georgia — driven by frustration over systemic injustice and a shared vision of safety, dignity, and self-determination. What began as a land purchase has grown into Freedom, Georgia — now encompassing up to 70 families and 5,000 acres, with infrastructure being built, community gardens being organized, and long-term plans for cooperative economics, food sovereignty, and environmental stewardship. This is not just land ownership. It is a blueprint for how communities reclaim space, build generational wealth, and inspire transformation.
