Our third and final day of Christmas camp started with games! After getting exhausted and warm from running around and jumping on and off our patient and oh so loveable ponies, it was time for baking cookies with Mary, owner and creative mastermind of Spoonfuls of Sugar. Each camper made a gift bag with the cookies they baked, then they got on their ponies for a special Christmas game!

Thank you campers for coming to camp! Thank you parents for sending them! And giant thanks to everyone who made this such a fun time: ponies/horses Luna, Velvet, Paris, Rainbow, Sydney, Beau, Jack Jack and Pippi. Art pro Alice Porter, baking pro Mary/Spoonfuls of Sugar, and of course my co instructor and master organizer Teresa Pilegaard from North Star Riding Academy! More camps are in the works, including one January 3 and 4.

Today the campers had morning AND afternoon riding lessons, and in between rides had an art lesson with pro artist Alice Porter. The kids learned how to conceptualize an animal in geometric shapes then put their vision into an actual wood sculpture (guess what animal all the campers made 😄).

Super fun first day of Christmas camp! The day started with feeding and bringing in the ponies, tacking up then riding. By the time the ponies were untacked and turned out again, it was time for lunch and gingerbread making! Campers made a gingerbread farm, complete with a barn, 2 run in sheds and fencing, along with pigs, chickens, cows and horses.

Love that JLJ ponies are a part of this 🥰

I wanted to share with you the words from one of our parents, Heather Gray, who posted the following on her FB page:

Today is and while there are so many worthy causes to support, I’d like to ask my friends to consider North Star Riding Academy.

It’s hard for me to even begin to describe how incredibly near and dear this cause is to our family. As the mom of a child with special needs, I am most grateful for the truly inclusive community at North Star. When I approached my friend Teresa Pilegaard about therapeutic riding for my son with Down Syndrome, I knew I couldn’t add one more therapy to his schedule without giving his younger sister an opportunity to participate. (Being a medical sibling can be so hard. Especially at a young age where every therapy feels like something special and fun for their sibling with special needs and they can’t participate. My daughter spends so much time sitting in the car or the waiting room with me while her brother has his weekly appointments.)

I didn’t know how to make it work time wise or financially for both kids to ride, but I knew if we were going to add equine therapy, I had to find a way for both kids to ride. Teresa has been so amazing at finding ways to work with us so that my son can receive the amazing benefits of equine therapy, while his sister gets a regular riding lesson and the chance to develop equestrian skills appropriate for a typically developing child.

My kids have both gained so much from this amazing place and from Teresa’s instruction. I could go on and on about the confidence it’s built in both of them and the ways it’s contributed to my son’s language and gross/fine motor development. North Star Riding Academy is a place where the WHOLE family is seen and celebrated. My kids are thriving and they love being able to do something together (which is so rare for medical families). It’s given them an interest/hobby to share, a way to see and appreciate each other’s abilities, and the chance to grow side by side at their own unique speeds.

If you’re looking for a place to contribute—financially or as a volunteer, please consider North Star. It has truly been such a wonderful and inclusive place for our family and I can’t recommend them highly enough!

*************

This is why we do what we do - supporting the whole family and following the research that INCLUSION WORKS!! We hope the impact of relationships with the horse and a community of inclusion will help create a more empathetic world. Thank you so much, Heather, for sharing this, we LOVE having all of you as part of the community.

We are still looking for donations to reach the $3,000 mark (we are at a little over $2,000)! Please donate here to support our horses and riders! https://givebutter.com/oyNVNK

Giving Tuesday is tomorrow. Please support North Star in their mission!

GIVING TUESDAY 2022!! SUPPORT OUR HORSES!!

As we gear up for Giving Tuesday 2022 I've been thinking a lot about our herd of horses. We are so blessed by the horses we have in our program and are so grateful for their kindness and patience. We do our best to provide the highest levels of care and training so that our horses stay sound, both mentally and physically.

Our focus for giving Tuesday this year is support for our wonderful herd! We tend to have bookend horses - young and green, and old and seasoned. Covid has made an huge impact on the equine market and has been challenging for the last two years to replace lesson horses as they retire from our program. A horse that, in years past, would either be donated or cost us less than $2,500 is now going for $7,500. So, we've had to adapt!

We love bringing horses along for our program because we are able to train them to the job the way we want them to do it! BUT...in this market the horses often have some poor training to correct or are just very green. We firmly believe that training on the ground is the foundation for good behavior under saddle. AND we need our horses to be handled by volunteers and young riders, some with mobility limitations, so the horses must have good ground manners. Many (most? all?) of these horses have holes in their ground education. It is a lot more time on my part to get the horses up to speed which takes away from my other duties. The increase in training time has definitely been challenging. We've enlisted other trainers to help as much as financially feasible because I can't do it all! Thank you to Jennifer Lee, Katy Brown, Tina Legno, and Michael Alway for all your help over the years supporting our lesson horses.

Every little bit donated helps us with the cost of quality care for our horses, which, in turn, leads to safe, effective lessons for our riders.

Will you please donate below and share with your friends?

Thank you to our amazing donors for everything you do for our herd!!

****NEWS FLASH: Sydney Voted Pony President****

In a close race, Sydney was elected Pony President today by our Election Day campers and counsellors. Pippi was voted Vice President.

The two ponies broke a number of glass ceilings with their historic victory, the most notable of which is that both are chestnut mares.

Sydney's platform of "MORE TREATS FOR BREAKAST" won the hearts of campers and counsellors alike, along with her promise of "MORE GRASS".

She won in a run-off special election held at snack time, which probably helped her clinch the victory.

Thank you to all of the Camp-aign-ers for well representing their candidates. All of the Ponies up for election had campaign posters and Camp-aign-ers to create and present their platform.

Sydney said that now that she has been elected she has a strong endorsement to ensure that not just ponies, but that everyone gets "MORE TREATS FOR BREAKFAST".

For more information on Election Day Camp, or other camps hosted by Jennifer Lee Jumpers and North Star Riding Academy, please message or call 540-272-1350.

Kenzie rode her mare Bea, dressed as a Bee, for the Red Gate jumper show. Love the flapping wings!
Congratulations to Stella, Grace and Juliet on their very first show! They did extremely well navigating their first real jumper course. Loved all the family supporters who came to cheer them on!
And great job Alyssa, who had to contend with Jack Jack spooking at people seated on the hill. Most importantly, she didn't give up, but just got more determined and ended up riding a very good round.
Oh and the flying 'Bee' was 4th in a big class. Bee-utiful round, Kenzie!

Cocoa Chai Latte finished 6th out of 85 Show Hunters at RRP. Thank you Center Stage Farm, Jackie Acksel and Darcy Scudero for your beautiful boy "Starbucks". Thank you Tiffany Carey for all that driving! And for keeping us organized and on track. Chris Webb and Charlie thank you for the training sessions! What's next for Chai? Think he's staying in the JLJ family 🥰
As for Classy (Classic Presence), who decided the night before leaving for RRP would be a good time to abscess, he got to come along for the ride and have some intensive nursing. Now that we're home he's better 😆

We are proud to present the 2022 ASPCA Makeover Marketplace, a premier listing of Thoroughbreds that have been carefully selected and prepared for a second career in sport and are now available for sale or adoption at the Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA). Today, we're featuring Classic Presence (Street Boss - Seven Grand, by Pembroke), a 2017 16.3 hand bay gelding bred in Kentucky by Rick Tronz. He made 6 career starts but never hit the board, retiring with earnings of $3,870 after his last race on September 26, 2021 at Golden Gate for trainer Jedd B. Josephson. He was a $60,000 yearling purchase from Keeneland.

Makeover trainer Jennifer Lee describes Classic Presence as suitable for amateurs and juniors in dressage, eventing, fox hunting, show hunter or show jumper. "Stunning, big bodied, with a fabulous jump and a brain to match. Easy to ride and train, it was hard to decide which discipline to do with him, because he could excel at any. "Classy" is class all the way."

Classic Presence is located in The Plains, VA and is expected to compete in Show Jumper and Show Hunter at the Thoroughbred Makeover; he is bridle number 164. For full listing, including contact information and price, please visit https://www.therrp.org/horses/3917/

In a lesson the other day, Rachel produced a water bottle like magic, but turns out it was in the pocket of her Sync Equestrian riding pants! I asked her what else was in those amazing pockets and she gave us a tour. Hint - there was not just one water bottle, but two, plus other things!!! 🤩

Not our usual post, but this horse is too amazing not to share, as we absolutely adore him. Please message or comment below Jennifer Lee Jumpers If interested. ❤️💪🐴
Thought I'd share this video of Dodger casually napping and living his best life lol
Since others have talked about the facility and lessons, here is a very positive comment on Jennifer Lee's skill as a horse trainer.

I took a beloved TB mare to her for a career change since this horse had made it clear fox hunting is not her sport. I had serious doubts about how to find her the new right home with some new better suited career.

After just a few months, Jennifer has her happily hanging out at horse shows, calmly and happily performing quite competently and successfully as a show hunter.

This means we are now equipped to find her a new owner--with the comfort of knowing she can become someone else's beloved mare with a career that should be rewarding for both owner and horse. Bravo to Jennifer!
Have room for this one? 🤣
Thank you Jennifer Brooks Lee for finding Zulla and making our girl very happy!
Came across this while driving down Zulla today and had to stop and take a picture ! Jennifer Lee Jumpers
Hi Jenny! I would love to reconnect. Just moved and going through letters read yours. They are sitting only desk. Then went to a reunion with Megan Schultz who told me where to find you. Hope you are well. ❤️
Yay, Jenn!
You shouldn't say things like that Jennifer...
