NUTRITION AND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Over time, the human population have become more sedentary, overfed or malnourished, chasing after the good things of life thereby sleeping less than usual. Life feels "cool" when we can get to our jobs or the grocery store without walking or getting any sun on our skin. It is not surprising to see an increasing prevalence in mental health disorders.

As a nutrition professional, striving to improve health through nutrition, I can say all hope is not lost. How? Eat right + Exercise!

Recent studies from peer-reviewed journals show promising research with regards to the complex relationship between nutrition and mental health. Foods to improve on among the general population include Vitamin D (food sources: bony fish like sardines, salmon, egg yolk, cheese, beef liver) and Omega-3 fatty acids (food sources: fish, seafoods, flax seed, eggs, soybeans, Brussels spouts, cauliflower). Not forgetting regular exercise to boost endorphins aka "happy hormones"... Watch out for more research on the topic!

Is there a link between nutrition and the gender of your baby? Grab 1/2 cup grapes or a small banana + some nuts, sit, relax and read on...
* Know your day of ovulation, different for every woman. Most important factor
*Y-boy travels faster, shorter life-span
*X-girl outlives most Y, but slow in travel
*Intercourse on day of ovulation = Y-boy; Before ovulation = X-girl
So where does NUTRITION come to play?
*Alkaline environment like alkaline promoting foods (most fruits and veggies, green juices, beans, nuts) favor Y-boy
*Acidic environment like acidic promoting foods (processed foods, most grains, added sugars, eggs, dairy, animal protein) favor X-girl
*To be double sure, "douche before the deed" with baking soda (1 tablespoon in 1 cup/ 8 oz of water) for Y-boy or vinegar (1 tablespoon in 1 cup/8oz of water) for X-girl
* Same environment/pH principle used for IVF gender selection

"REAL DIETS" VS "FAD DIETS"
1. Keeps favorite foods: Replaces favorites with less desirable options
2. Tasty but healthy foods: Better taste desired
3. Generalized portion control: Specific portion control
4. Balanced macronutrients: Demonizes at least 1 macronutrient
5. Adequate micronutrients: May be lacking in some micronutrients
6. Long-term, sustainable : Short-term, not sustainable
7. Lifestyle change: Diet in vogue (recycled every 20 years/new name)
8. Modified to fit ethnic foods, flexible: Not very flexible

WEIGHT GAIN VS WEIGHT LOSS

"LEPA TO OROBO"
During my teenage and early adult years, I was so skinny that I desired to be "big". I wanted my clothes to "mold" my body. Even my tailor-made clothes seemed to have some "air-pockets". How was I to go about that? Eating more, weight-gain pills? This was never to be until I started having kids. Post 3 babies, life experiences and weight fluctuations, I know better. Why desire to gain weight when so many want to lose weight? Different strokes for different folks!

The rising prevalence and cost of Obesity/overweight is no joke. Obesity is associated with co-morbidities like metabolic syndrome (cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes), sleep apnea, arthritis, gall bladder disease and certain types of cancer. So be thankful if you are "skinny" as long as you feel well and are adequately nourished.

"OROBO TO LEPA"
Dieting, gym memberships, private Olympians, etc. - the need to be at a healthy weight cannot be over-emphasized. I understand that, for some, getting to that "Ideal Body Weight" may never happen. Why? We are individuals, unique in our own ways, even metabolically. Some are big-boned and/or muscle-laden. What I preach is adequate nutrition, regular exercise plus restful sleep. You may have tried all but still have some "undesired weight" or loose skin. No worries! What matters is your fitness and vitality. Learn to love yourself no matter what!
