PROS AND CONS OF BREEDING VS. GROWING OUT YOUR OWN FEEDERS
We first started with 2 feeder pigs. Born in February, brought them to our property in April, grazed all spring, summer, fall. They finished on acorns then went to freezer camp. It was GREAT. Simple, just 2 pigs pal-ing around, growing bacon.
Then, that sneaky breeder mindset came creeping in and said "hold my beer" π
..we thought "wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to worry about where we would source our next set of feeder piglets?"
Well folks, it aint that simple...
Litters of piglets sure are a blast, but that doesn't even begin to factor in the cost/job of extra fencing, extra shelters, extra water set ups, extra feed stations, extra FEED, extra rotating, extra attention to *try* to keep your Boar and Sows seperated, extra overall everything, energy!
To take it another step further if you are a decent human, then you will spend extra time to educate yourself on what is quality worth breeding, and what should go to the freezer.
Our first registered IPP breeders were so loveable and farrowed great, but boy did they look more like feeders...hard decisions have to be made even when you have lots of time and money invested into a strategic plan. As a breeder, you make plans, work hard to make them happen, then hold on for dear life to keep your sanity when it doesnt go according to plan.
In other words, I envy those of you raising your 2 cute feeder pigs but I can't stop π
