๐Ÿ You canโ€™t manage a Varroa problem if you donโ€™t know you have one.

One of the most important things a beekeeper can do, especially as we move through late summer and toward fall, is test for Varroa mites.

The danger with Varroa is that the problem can be building inside a colony long before it becomes obvious from the outside. A hive may still have bees flying, bringing in pollen, and appearing relatively normal while mites are reproducing inside capped brood and viruses are beginning to spread.

๐Ÿ”Ž Thatโ€™s why looking at your bees is not the same thing as testing your bees.

Varroa mites enter brood cells during the developing stages of a honey beeโ€™s life. Once the cell is capped, the mite can reproduce and feed on the developing bee. When that bee eventually emerges, the damage may already have been done.

And Varroa isnโ€™t just a parasite riding around on a honey bee.

๐Ÿฆ  Mites are also capable of transmitting viruses.

That is one of the reasons mite populations can become so destructive. As more infected bees emerge, those bees interact with other bees throughout the colony. Some may also drift into neighboring colonies, potentially carrying mites and viruses with them.

Ray compares it to what happens when one sick child shows up at an elementary school. One person gets sick, then another, then another, and eventually the problem spreads far beyond where it started.

The same basic principle can happen in an apiary.

That is why you should never assume that because your colony looked good a few weeks ago, your mite numbers are still acceptable today.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

There are different ways beekeepers monitor Varroa.

A screened bottom board with a white sticky board can help you see mites that fall from the colony. The white background makes the tiny reddish-brown mites easier to distinguish from wax cappings, pollen, debris, and everything else that naturally falls through the hive.

And remember, Varroa mites are small.

If your eyesight makes them difficult to see, grab a magnifying glass or use the camera on your phone to zoom in on the sticky board.

๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ” Sometimes your phone can become one of the most useful inspection tools in the bee yard!

For a more direct mite count, many beekeepers use an alcohol wash. A measured sample of bees is placed into a mite-washing container with alcohol and agitated so the mites are separated from the bees. The mites can then be counted, giving the beekeeper a much clearer picture of what is happening inside the colony.

The important part is not simply saying:

โŒ โ€œI donโ€™t see any mites.โ€

The important question is:

โœ… โ€œWhen was the last time I actually tested?โ€

Varroa populations can change dramatically as the season progresses. At the same time, the colony population and amount of brood can also change. That means a mite situation that looked acceptable earlier in the year may look very different several weeks later.

This becomes especially important as colonies begin raising the bees that will carry them through fall and winter.

You want those bees developing under the healthiest conditions possible.

๐Ÿ’ก A strong-looking hive is not a substitute for a mite test.

๐Ÿ’ก A good honey crop is not a substitute for a mite test.

๐Ÿ’ก Lots of bees at the entrance are not a substitute for a mite test.

Testing gives you information.

And information allows you to make better decisions for your bees.

If you havenโ€™t checked your Varroa numbers recently, put it on your beekeeping checklist. Then keep checking as the season changes instead of relying on a single test from weeks or months ago.

๐Ÿ Remembering Dolly Parton and Her Honey Bee Roots ๐Ÿ

Like so many people around the world, we were saddened to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton at the age of 80. Her music, generosity, humor and unmistakable East Tennessee spirit touched generations of people.

As we remember Dolly, we wanted to share a little piece of her story that has a special connection to the beekeeping community.

Dolly grew up in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, and her father, Lee Parton, raised honey bees. Dolly even joked that those childhood memories might have had something to do with the famous hairstyles she would later wear. She once recalled, โ€œMy daddy used to raise bees,โ€ adding that some of her hairstyles looked like a beehive and perhaps she was influenced by that. ๐Ÿโค๏ธ

It's a small and charming connection to a woman who never forgot where she came from. From humble beginnings in the mountains of Tennessee, Dolly went on to become one of the most beloved entertainers and philanthropists in American history, while always keeping a little bit of Appalachia with her.

Today, the beekeeping community joins millions of others in remembering a true American original.

Rest in peace, Dolly. Thank you for the music, the laughter, the kindness and for never forgetting your mountain roots. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽถ

Maybe there was a little more โ€œbeeโ€ in that famous beehive hairdo than we ever realized.

๐Ÿ Low Varroa numbers now? Donโ€™t assume youโ€™re finished checking for the year.

Late summer and early fall are critical times to keep a close eye on Varroa mites. Even if your mite count looks good today, Ray recommends testing again toward the end of October before your colonies settle into the late fall and winter months.

Why does that matter? ๐Ÿ‚โ„๏ธ

As colder weather arrives and bees spend more time confined inside the hive, viruses associated with Varroa can spread more easily throughout the colony. Going into winter with an elevated mite load can put tremendous pressure on your bees and contribute to a rapid colony decline.

๐Ÿ FROM A TINY EGG TO A WORKING HONEY BEE... ITโ€™S AN AMAZING TRANSFORMATION! ๐Ÿฏ

Every honey bee you see flying from flower to flower started life as a tiny egg tucked inside a wax cell deep within the hive. What happens over the next few weeks is one of the most fascinating processes in nature.

Honey bees undergo what scientists call complete metamorphosis, progressing through four basic stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Letโ€™s take a closer look! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿฅš STAGE 1: THE EGG

The life cycle begins when the queen places a single egg into a brood cell.

A healthy queen can lay well over 1,000 eggs in a day during periods of strong colony growth. For approximately the first three days, that tiny egg develops inside the cell before hatching.

And hereโ€™s something fascinating: the queen can control whether she lays a fertilized or unfertilized egg. Fertilized eggs develop into female workers or queens, while unfertilized eggs develop into male drones.

๐Ÿ› STAGE 2: THE LARVA

After about three days, the egg hatches into a tiny white larva.

At this point, nurse bees take over.

The larva doesnโ€™t look anything like the adult bee it will eventually become. It spends its days eating and growing at an incredible rate while being cared for by young worker bees.

The type and amount of food a developing bee receives also plays an important role in its future.

๐Ÿ‘‘ A larva selected to become a queen is fed large quantities of royal jelly throughout its development.

๐Ÿ Worker larvae receive royal jelly initially and are then transitioned to a diet that includes bee bread and other food supplied by nurse bees.

As the larva grows, it molts several times until it nearly fills its cell.

๐Ÿ”’ THEN THE CELL IS CAPPED

Once the larval stage is complete, worker bees place a porous wax cap over the brood cell.

From the beekeeperโ€™s perspective, this is what we call capped brood.

But behind that little wax covering, something remarkable is happening.

๐Ÿ STAGE 3: THE PUPA

Inside the capped cell, the developing bee enters the pupal stage.

This is where the dramatic transformation occurs.

๐Ÿ Compound eyes
๐Ÿ Adult body hairs

As development progresses, the pupa begins looking more and more like the familiar honey bee we recognize.

Eventually, the transformation is complete.

๐ŸŒŸ STAGE 4: THE ADULT BEE EMERGES

When the bee is ready, it chews through the wax capping and climbs out of its cell as an adult.

For a typical worker bee, the entire journey from freshly laid egg to adult takes approximately 21 days.

But not every honey bee develops at the same rate.

๐Ÿ‘‘ Queen: about 16 days
๐Ÿ Worker: about 21 days
๐Ÿšน Drone: about 24 days

Those differences are extremely important to beekeepers when evaluating brood, queen performance, colony growth, and even Varroa mite reproduction.

And once that newly emerged worker bee steps out of her cell, her job is just beginning!

Young workers usually start by performing duties inside the hive, such as cleaning cells and caring for developing brood. As they mature, their responsibilities change. They may produce wax, handle nectar, guard the entrance, and eventually become foragers.

๐ŸŒผ Those older foragers are the bees we most often notice outside the hive, traveling from flower to flower gathering nectar, pollen, water, and other resources the colony needs.

And all the while, another generation is developing inside the hive.

Understanding the honey bee life cycle is more than just interesting information for a beekeeper. It helps you understand what you are seeing during an inspection.

When you recognize eggs, young larvae, capped brood, and emerging bees, you are essentially reading the story of your colony.

A healthy mixture of these different stages can tell you that the queen has been laying consistently and that the colony is actively raising its next generation. ๐Ÿโค๏ธ

The more you understand what is happening inside those brood cells, the better equipped you are to make good decisions for your bees.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ The recommended daytime temperature range for Formic Pro is 50ยฐF to 85ยฐF.

When temperatures climb above 85ยฐF, the colony can experience additional stress from the treatment. The manufacturer specifically warns that treating in hotter conditions can increase the risk of:

๐Ÿ Excessive adult bee loss
๐Ÿ‘‘ Queen loss or supersedure
๐Ÿฅš Interrupted or delayed egg laying
๐Ÿชฑ Increased brood mortality
๐Ÿ”ฅ Additional stress on an already heat-stressed colony

And the first few days are especially important. The Formic Pro label warns that temperatures of 92ยฐF or higher during the first three days may lead to excessive bee, brood and queen loss.

๐Ÿ‘‰ One important clarification: 85ยฐF itself is still at the very top of the labeled application range. Once your forecast begins pushing above 85ยฐF, it is time to wait for a cooler weather window rather than taking an unnecessary chance with your colony.

๐Ÿ“… Check the forecast before treating, not just the temperature at the moment you install the strips. A few cooler days can make a big difference.

Varroa control is critical, but so is choosing the right treatment for the conditions. Always read and follow the current Formic Pro label before applying any mite treatment. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฏ
