Ever wonder why bees suddenly “hit the road” and leave the hive? 🐝

When a colony absconds, it is usually a sign that something is wrong. Ray recommends checking these common causes first:

Bees may be short on food, especially after the nectar flow ends. Once natural nectar dries up, supplemental feeding can help keep the colony settled and supported.

Another possible cause is toxicity inside the hive. Pesticide exposure, roadside spraying, or contaminated comb can make the hive unlivable. Dark, old comb can also hold residues over time, so replacing old foundation every 3–5 years is a smart practice.

A strong hive needs clean comb, steady food when needed, and a healthy environment. When those pieces are missing, bees may decide it is time to move on. 🐝
