Sad news, this morning we lost Buffalo Clover VAL Garavani, nothing traumatic and we are assuming with his age, suddenness, and lack of illness that it was probably his heart. He will be epically missed by all of us.

I was so excited about our purchase (we bought ours from Hamby) of an Express Pistol Grip Dehorner. I've heard nothing but good things about the Rhineharts but the couple I've used felt bulky and a bit awkward handling and made me shy away from doing our own disbudding.

So I saw these and had been going back and forth on them because I've not seen anyone mention them or really using them for goats. They do come with a 5/8ths tip (close enough to the 1/2 our vet uses) and heats up QUICK to 1100F/600C (also similar in heat to the X-50).

Directions were a bit intimidating, but the actual use was very easy, quick seamless. Easy to handle, even with kids trying to throw their heads around. It's also sturdy but lightweight.

We didn't burn quite as long only about 3-4 second intervals for about 2-3 times. We'll see but they looked very nice after done. Kids had a better time then the vet who likes to put them fully out to do.

So far (barring we see scurs coming back up which is easy to nip now in the butt doing them at home) but we LOVED it.

We've been a bit busy with kids and holidays so introducing our fall keeper kids has been very slow.

Juniper Glen RS Gidget (name pending), is out of Juniper Glen G Cecily, a Emerald C Ranch OT Raven daughter and by Buffalo Clover VAL Garavani. Gidget is sired by Flying UBar Re*****on Steele, a son of Flying UBar Dolly Madison and by Gypsyvi'lle Silver Charm.

Wondering what difference higher butterfat makes? Both of these cheddars were made with 2 gallons of milk! Many thanks to our cheesemaking student Carla Murphy of California for sharing her photo with us!

Monday we had a rough kidding with Cecily, had large triplets with the first two bucklings with tricky positions. The first buckling we lost short after birth, the second buckling was doa, but this little girl was third and softens the loss a little. Cecily is fine, and the good news is having palpated her, she has lots of width in the pelvis. This little girl as been dubbed Gidget.

This is a sad part of the industry, you lose some, and it doesn't matter what you do, you can do absolutely everything and still. . . It tragically can happen. Everything can be done right and it happens. Doing it right is preventive, not a guarantee but it saves you from the guilt of wondering if you had done something different if it would have ended differently.

Thanks to our fantastic vet clinic for making sure we had everything we needed.

I don't know how many times I've had this doe picked apart for 'this and that' wrong with her but she is still an absolute favorite of mine. This isn't a glamor shot, she is hairy and needs her feet trimmed. There isn't a pretty background or the right lighting, nor is it a fancy camera but just a quick cellphone pic but. . . She's still a doe that makes me stop and smile when I see her.
