If you’re planning a party and don’t have enough cups for everybody, aluminum cups are a really great option! They’ll run you about $0.50 each at Target, and you can wash and reuse them (or if you don’t have a good way to do that, recycle). We didn’t even know cheap aluminum cups like this existed until about a year ago, so if this is news to you: help us spread the word!

If you think we may be getting ahead of ourselves when it comes to AI and the large data centers that support it, consider attending a strategy meeting next week: "Getting Ahead of Data Centers in Shawnee County," Wednesday, June 24, 6-7 p.m., at 2303 SW College Ave.

We're not hosting the meeting, but we'll be there to join the conversation. Opponents of data centers have a wide variety of interests and goals, but we can all come together around a shared one: to slow down the process of permitting new data centers in Shawnee County. We want a process that is transparent, with a variety of meaningful opportunities for the public to weigh in. We want discussions that reflect thoughtful research on the part of county staff and elected officials. We want the county to listen to its citizens. Let's form a strategy to make sure that happens.

See, smell, and taste summer this week with so many seasonal favorites! Piña colada tallow balm from Rauch Family Farm, peach cobbler and cherry pie jams from Mama T. Jams and Jellies, slicing tomatoes from Juniper Hill Farms, and a couple flower bouquets from Everbloom Flower Farm (on sale since they were left from last week...but still super beautiful)! Order by Wednesday evening for Thursday delivery or pickup at the shop on Friday/Saturday.

Who needs to buy new when the world has so much good stuff already? Join us on the journey to create a more circular economy with a School, Office, and Art Supply Swap!

You can donate gently used supplies, "shop" the swap (for free), or do both!

We're looking for items like binders, backpacks, notebooks, staplers, scissors, crayons, pencils, and markers that still have lots of life left. We're not really looking for craft items like yarn, fabric, paper plates, or popsicle sticks.

Drop off donations of gently used supplies at 2303 SW College Ave. in the main office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. the week before the swap (July 19-24). Everyone who donates will receive a ticket for early entry to the swap (12 p.m.). Doors open to the general public at 1 p.m.

If you charted the frequency of all the words people said at the Board of County Commission meeting on Thursday, "slow down" would be very near the top of that list (probably right after "data center"). The Commissioners did vote to slow down the process somewhat by requiring that data center construction would need to go through the conditional use permit process. They did NOT go so far as to slow it down substantially by implementing a moratorium (or suggesting they would consider further measures to slow it down in the future).

The county is anticipating receiving a data center proposal within the next two months, so things will continue to move quickly. Keep up with what's going on by subscribing to the Topeka Sustainability Digest (link in the comments). This week's edition will come out on Sunday and include a link to sign up for a public meeting to organize around this issue (as well as a number of other sustainability-related events on the horizon).

Today, we did something we have been waiting to do for 5 years, 11 months, and 9 days. Since our first week of deliveries as the Topeka Growers Group. We picked up veggies from the farmers and wheeled them directly into our walk-in cooler!

No tetris-ing them into every available corner of every available fridge. No more waiting until the last minute to pack delivery orders because there's not enough cooler space to hold the packed bags. The difference this cooler will make for our operations is incredible.

Getting here has taken a lot of work and a lot of patience. We applied for the grant that funded it nearly 2 years ago (and had been trying to get it funded for at least a year before that). We waited as the federal government froze, then unfroze the funding. We filled out pages of paperwork. We unloaded it from the delivery truck on one of the coldest, snowiest days of the winter. We set it up ourselves, shaving off pieces of foam until every piece fit perfectly and it all locked together. And Robert worked closely with the electrician to get everything wired this week, both of them staying until well past midnight so they could get it finished in time for veggie pickups today.

All that work and patience...none of it is anything special. It's the story of every small business and nonprofit working to make something out of nothing. Working to make their community better. Working to make their dreams come true.

But we're taking a moment to celebrate this evening. Everything ready to go for tomorrow. Our veggies safe and fresh in that cool, crisp air. 🫜

Have you been noticing these How2Recycle labels on your packaging lately? They've been around for awhile, but it seems like they're suddenly on everything! And that's great, because they actually use words (instead of just numbers) to describe the item you're looking at and what you're supposed to do with it.

There are four main categories of labels:

♻️ Widely Recycleable (you can most likely put it in your curbside bin)

♻️ Store Drop-Off (you can put it in the plastic bag recycling bin at the grocery store)

♻️ Check Locally (you can't put it in your Shawnee County curbside bin...but it's definitely something we can recycle at Full Circle)

❌ Not Yet Recyclable (not recyclable in curbside bins anywhere in the U.S...but there's still a good chance we can recycle it at Full Circle!)

Sometimes one package will have multiple labels on it for different components of the package. One label will apply to the "plastic tray" and one to the "plastic wrapper" around the tray, or something like that. Make sure to read closely so you understand what to do with each part.

The labels definitely aren't perfect...but neither is a system of memorizing numbers, rules, and exceptions to the rules. They're one more tool in your toolbelt as you get better at figuring out what to do with what!

And if you have questions, ask! (Or check out our Recycling Guide in the comments...and then ask!) We're not experts, but we do spend a lot of time thinking about recycling, and we would LOVE to help answer questions and clear up confusion about it.

If you were planning on attending the Planning Commission meeting tomorrow to support our compost processing site in Tecumseh: hold off another month. We’ve decided to revise our application to address feedback from the fire department so we can reduce the risk of combustion at the facility. As a result, we’ll be asking the Planning Commission to defer action on this permit until the July 13 meeting.

The Earth CAN use your support later in the week at the Board of County Commission meeting where they will be discussing data centers. We'll be speaking in favor of a one-year moratorium to give county staff time to research and craft reasonable regulations (as they did for solar energy projects). The meeting is on Thursday, June 11, 9 a.m. at 707 SE Quincy. If you’re not able to attend in person, consider emailing the commissioners about this issue in advance at [email protected].

We started Full Circle because we thought Topeka needed it. But you know what we’ve discovered? It's not just Topeka!

More and more, people are coming from Lawrence, Kansas City, Manhattan…and we even get messages from out of state wondering if we can ship or asking about sustainability resources in their area. It makes us so happy to be building something that people in Topeka appreciate and that people in other communities wish they had!

Super stoked to put our first free TerraCycle bin out into the community at Fox Family Dental! If you're a patient of Dr. Fox, bring your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, and floss containers to your next appointment to be recycled for free!

Dr. Fox and his staff have been working to reduce their environmental impact for years, partnering with Kaylyn Hobelman and the Washburn University EcoBods to recycle all of their plastic bags and film (around 600 lbs. kept out of the landfill so far)! So we weren't surprised they said yes to helping us recycle more dental waste and build a more sustainable Topeka!

(And as a reminder: anyone can recycle dental waste and plastic bags/film for free at our shop: 2303 SW College, Friday, 1-6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.)
