Stump Sound is part of the White Oak River Basin. North Carolina's forgotten drainage. From an environmental perspective it may be one of the finest examples of an intact Coastal Plain estuarine system left in the state.

It drains about 1,382 sq. miles of land and shares 132 miles of coastline with the Atlantic Ocean. The basin is the smallest river drainage contained entirely within the state of North Carolina. Low inland ridges separate it from the Cape Fear and Nuese basins.

A living coastal system shaped by the forces of wind and water. It remains largely dynamic and wild.

Oyster farming isn't always sunrises on the half-shell. Sometimes you lose the crop.

Summer mortality is common in some areas as the sounds heat up. A combination of stressors like high salinty, warm water, and low oxygen can push oysters over the edge and cause major losses to larger oysters.

A lot of times the best growing areas are some of the most affected.

All you can do is keep on shuckin' 🤙
