Educational post: UPDATE: Final Toxicology and Histology will take 2 weeks. For now acorns are only apparent cause of death. These two were new to the field and the youngest. The rest are doing good at home on the dry lot.

Just an awareness post folks.

I'm losing my 6 waygu/herefords to acorn toxicity. The first two were 7 month old heifers born and raised here but we grazed on a new pasture this fall. I had scouted for Johnson grass, and never looked for oak trees before it was too late. It happens fast with very few signs.

To the new owners of cattle let it be known to fence off Oaks or remove them from your pastures. In TN that's a tough order as there is usually woods and pasture. Red Oaks are said to be the most toxic.

The lab found only a few acorns in the rumen but the hemorrhaging was throughout every organ. I brought the other 4 older steers home and gave activated charcoal. They are bleeding but still up and eating. There is no specific treatment other than prevention. This is by far my worst week in farming. Another lesson learned the hard way.
