Gee, I thought the location was L.A. or San Francisco!!!!!😆
In Croatia, a series of underused tennis courts found a second life during the harsh winter months — transformed into emergency shelters for unhoused families. Where matches once echoed, rows of insulated tents now stood beneath the covered courts, offering warmth and safety when the temperature dropped below freezing.
The project, initiated by local volunteers and supported by community donations, used compost heaters — an eco-friendly method that turns organic waste into steady, radiant heat. Inside each tent were sleeping mats, warm blankets, and battery-powered lanterns. Families who once slept in parks or abandoned buildings could now rest with dignity and privacy.
Portable showers and food stalls were set up nearby, along with play areas for children and spaces to store belongings securely. One corner of the court even featured a mini-library and coloring tables — small details that brought back a sense of normalcy to disrupted lives.
What made this initiative unique wasn’t just the resourcefulness, but the collaboration — between city officials, architects, tennis club members, and everyday residents. A space built for sport became a haven, proving that infrastructure doesn’t need to sit idle while people suffer just outside its gates.
