It has come to my attention — and my inbox — that there are quite a few people frustrated with me lately because of schedule changes, events I’ve had to turn down and custom orders I haven’t been able to accept.
And while I normally wouldn’t feel the need to explain myself, I think this is something worth saying.
The past few weeks have been rough.
I lost the ONE person who meant absolutely everything to me, and I’ve had a much harder time than I expected bringing myself to step back into the kitchen and trailer without my dad here.
Between losing my dad, back-to-school, three kids, sports schedules and simply trying to figure out what life looks like now… the bakery has had to take a backseat sometimes.
I’ve turned down events.
I’ve turned away custom orders.
I’ve changed my schedule.
I’ve cancelled things I originally planned on attending.
And some days I’ve had to force myself to find even a tiny bit of the spark that made me love being in the kitchen in the first place.
I understand that some of those decisions have disappointed people.
I’d like to say I’m sorry for the inconvenience… but to be completely honest, I’m not sorry for choosing my family.
My life revolves around these boys.
I refuse to be the parent who tells my kids they can’t play a sport, try something new or do something they love because Mom wants to work that day.
If there’s one thing my dad taught me growing up, it was “we do what makes our kids happy.”
I have three boys. Between them we already have football, wrestling, basketball and baseball. Next year all three want to start getting into demo derby, and apparently BMX racing might be entering the chat too. 😅
So yes, there will be events I say no to. There will be dates blocked off on my calendar. There will be custom orders I simply don’t have room for. And sometimes my schedule is going to change because one of my kids needs me somewhere else.
My family is everything to me.
Someday there won’t be practices to rush to. There won’t be games filling our weekends. There won’t be three little boys looking into the stands to see if Mom/Stepmom is watching.
And after losing my dad, I understand better than ever just how quickly “someday” comes.
Meg’s Midnight Bakery matters to me. I’ve poured so much of myself into building this business, and I’m incredibly grateful that so many people want me at their events, order from me and continue to support what I’m building.
But being their mom will always matter more.
I’m still here. I’m still baking. I’m still building this little empire that my dad was so damn proud of. I’m also trying to find my way back to loving something that feels a little different without him here cheering me on.
So things might look a little different for a while. I might say no more often. My calendar might have more unavailable days than it used to.
And if choosing what matters most means you find me sitting on a set of bleachers instead of behind the window of my trailer sometimes…
That’s exactly where I want to be. 🧡
