I am Van Webb, aka Van The Wine Man. In 2023, I passed the Court of Master Sommeliers Introductory Exam. After several decades of wine love combined with beverage and hospitality experience, I am an official wine man, offering personal and professional sommelier services. I serve private collectors with tastings, dinners and cellar building. I develop restaurant wine programs and host educational

dinners and fundraisers. I assist in bringing more great wines and spirits to Oklahoma. I am a passionate promoter of the Tulsa wine and dining scene.

My first Vinitaly is wrapped…50-ish tasting appointments…300++ wines…A fresh list of business ideas… A refreshingly grueling four days. (and nights) Big kudos to Annette, who hung in and excelled throughout the entire marathon. Thank you to our Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Texas friends for making it possible. I understand the winemakers want to sell us more wine, but I appreciate their generosity with their wines, and their time. It was great to see friends and make new ones. More Italian wine, anyone?

Sights from Vinitaly and beyond. I love it when I can surprise Annette. Our first stop at the fair was at Valdicava, one of her all-timers. Mad Men season 3 episode 8 played out with Annette and the Italian guys at lunch. I cannot imagine many scenarios where you randomly happen across a winemaker belting out opera-esque karaoke in a small corner bar like Simone, then be seated next to the rock star winemaker Charles Smith the next night at dinner. I had my traditional final tasting (more unlabeled, experimental wine) in the hotel room. There was continuous incredible food, but the very best came from small Trattoria Caprini in Negrar. Fabulous Italian style, design, and coffee all around. I again love Verona and Valpolicella. And One Flew South for the finish is tough to beat.

Damoli is a small family winery in Valpolicella Classico, making delicious traditional wines of the area. We had a wonderful tour and extensive tasting with Lara, whose energy and enthusiasm is indeed contagious. Fulmine, (lightning) the “tour guide dog”, did everything with us except taste the wine. We saw the very first buds that will become Damoli 2026. Our tasting also included recent creative experiments, like Rosé, and a Bianco that smelled and tasted like parmesan. Thank you Lara, Bruno, and Daniele for your generous hospitality! And another big thanks to Cory, Carrie, Bryan, and Christine for finding and referring them!

I discovered Speri on a trip to Verona years ago, and was excited to visit the winery and learn more about their extensive and trend-setting history. The seventh generation is carrying on a fine tradition in Valpolicella Classico. Thank you to Chiara and Giulia for the in-depth experience, and excellent local referrals!

Vinitaly wines and winemakers I loved, a handful of the many. 1967 Bertani. Experimental wines in unlabeled bottles. Alberto was likely the coolest cat in town. Special shout-out to our former OU Sooner Annesa. The Passentes stayed to the very end of day four and came out to invite me to taste. Thank you to all for your fine wines, storytelling, and style.
