Talk a walk with me along the flax field.

Birds are chirping. The bugs are vocal. The breeze is perfect. A couple clouds in a perfect blue sky. It’s a good day.

Hey wait a minute! That’s no bug!The flax field is hosting a guest today. Tentatively named Linus!

A handful of eggs — and soon several thousand larvae

If you purchase dried larvae from me or one of my distributors, know that you’re supporting a local business that has honed the fly farming skill to offer this resource on a local level.

Feed your future self, locally and sustainably 💪💪

Four Norway spruces were dropped this week and chipped up into ultra locally-sourced carbon for the next batches of compost.

Removing these trees plus other invasive brush while building boxes to propagate native trees is all part of the vision. And I will say this until I am blue in the face: I am incredibly grateful for every person who helps me along the way. And I’m super grateful to know a guy who likes to climb trees and knows his way around a 12” chipper!

For the bees, birds and trees!

Spring has been busy and also a little cold! Lots done but lots to do. Spring is hope and optimism and renewal. It’s overwhelming and also very satisfying.

This year’s garden plant fixation: several varieties of corn and amaranth. Also: indigo, marigolds and calendula.

Flax looks great so far.

Persimmons, dogwoods, currants and raspberries are going in the cleared out area. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago — the second best time is now!!

And I have a couple new experiments I’m planning.

So I feel like I have a good excuse to miss out on international compost awareness week. Maybe we move that? Make it a month? Or maybe we just focus on that indefinitely, mmmkay?
